Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A shortwave ridge has now moved over Southcentral Alaska ahead of
an occluded front which has moved into Southwest Alaska. This
occlusion is being driven by a parent low which is currently over
the Kamchatka. This occluded front is cold enough for mostly snow
across Southwest Alaska this morning, although there are some
spotty reports of rain mixing in at times. Rather extensive mid
and high level clouds streaming over Southcentral in association
with this front, and this is helping to keep low temperatures
rather warm. Finally, there is a basal shortwave trough forming at
the base of the aforementioned Kamchatka low in the vicinity of
46N 173E (about 500 hundred miles south of Shemya) forming a
strong near storm force surface low along a warm frontal boundary.
This upper level wave pattern will deamplify and become
increasingly "progressive" heading into the weekend.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The numerical models are in excellent agreement depicting the
general large scale pattern through the weekend with very little
in the way of sensible weather differences in terms of low tracks.
The biggest discrepancies are actually in the short term with
respect to precipitation distribution as the Bering front weakens
and moves east into Southcentral. The numerical guidance are all
keying in on a deamplifying shortwave trough traversing the
Western Alaska Range and moving east, but they are highly
disparate on how much moisture makes it over the Alaska Range.
Given the predominance of southwest flow aloft, this forecast will
favor the ECMWF and Canadian models which depict, more
aggressively, light snowfall impacting most of Southcentral today
and this evening (with the exception of the Kenai Peninsula and
Kodiak Island). The NAM and hi-res models were favored for this
forecast package.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist through the
night. There may be a brief MVFR CIG and VSBY this afternoon and
evening with light snowfall moving through, but this is expected
to end by late this evening with VFR conditions returning
overnight.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

An upper level trough heads toward Southcentral today, setting up
broad southwesterly flow and driving a weak surface front toward
Southcentral. Light snowfall is expected to spread into western
Cook Inlet and Susitna Valley this morning. Light snow will
become more widespread over the MAT-SU Valleys and Anchorage Bowl
this afternoon. Snowfall amounts will be fairly minor (up to 1
inch) with higher amounts along the Talkeetna Mountains. Snowfall
should taper off from the west overnight, though some snow
showers will linger along the Talkeetna Mountains and across the
Copper River Basin into Thursday morning. Weak outflow conditions
then setup over the North Gulf and eastern Kenai Peninsula/western
Prince William Sound Thursday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Rain and Snow over the southwest Mainland will begin to taper off
early this morning into, as the front continues to weaken and
push further inland. Some rain and snow showers are expected to
linger through early this evening, with little to no accumulations
expected throughout the day. As the front moves east, skies will
clear somewhat behind the front, and much of the day west of the
Kuskokwim Mountains will feature some sunshine. By tonight,
clearing skies and calm winds will allow temperatures to drop
quickly in the evening from Bristol Bay northward. Because of the
recent snowfall from the front, however, areas of freezing fog are
expected to develop tonight over the lower Kuskokwim Valley.

By Thursday afternoon into the overnight, another front oriented
more southeast to northwest will impact much of Southwest Alaska
starting at the coast with more light snowfall. Due to the short
duration of the system, only minor accumulations are expected
across parts of the southwest Mainland.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The tail-end of the front over the far eastern Bering will
have tracked inland this morning. Behind it, a much more
convective satellite regime is in place, making for a mix of
clouds and sun with plentiful snow showers, especially the further
west you go. The convective air mass will persist throughout the
day today. The next low begins moving into the western and
central Aleutians near Adak later this morning. This system will
track north through the central Bering, with gale force winds
expected to either side of the low. Storm force gusts are expected
south and west of the low. The associated front will move through
the rest of the Bering and into mainland Alaska by early Thursday
evening.

Yet another front is expected to move into the western Aleutians
Thursday afternoon bringing another round of mixed precipitation
and gusty winds. This front will progress northeastward, spreading
gusty southerly winds and rain into the central Aleutians/Bering
overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
The weather pattern will be turning into a repeat scenario into
the weekend. Weak ridging will build across the southern mainland
Wednesday into Thursday. This system will be followed by an upper
level trough and attendant weak front sliding through the AKPEN.
A weak surface low is expected spin up along this front and slide
east along the northern Gulf of Alaska Friday. Before this low
exits across the panhandle, warm air will again invade areas
along the Chugach. This will be short lived as cooler air dives
south and replaces the warm air towards this weekend. In a similar
fashion leading into next week, another transient ridge will
slide across southern Alaska as another front is expected by mid
week and the similar up and down cycle of temperatures.
