.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A vertically stacked low that has developed within a short wave in
the southern Gulf has become the dominate weather maker this
evening. This low is moving through the flow of the long wave
trough that once encompassed most of the Bering and Aleutians. The
jet stream is taking on a meridional shape with the main jet
streak in the eastern Gulf with a secondary streak approaching the
western Aleutians. Strong vorticity, and the favorable low
position in the left exit region of the jet is aiding in the low
development and intensification. A large amount of energy is
associated with the low, and it is advancing quickly towards the
northern Gulf which can be observed in satellite imagery. As this
strong low moves north, it is extending a warm front over the
southern mainland, bringing a wide swath of precipitation to
Southcentral, the northern Gulf Coast and the Kenai Peninsula.
High winds are also associated with this system which are being
observed throughout the northern Gulf. Along with the strong winds
and increased precipitation, the low is causing cold air
advection into the Bering and western Mainland. The influx of
moisture in combination with the cooler air is causing most of the
state to be covered in stratus.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models have finally settled on a more easterly track of the low
through the Gulf. Where the models struggled, they have come into
better agreement with the low moving into Prince William Sound
early Saturday morning. Model consistency persists through
Saturday afternoon when they start to diverge on a second low
moving from the southeast into the Gulf. The EC is the fastest
solution moving a second developing low into the northern Gulf
while the NAM and GFS maintain a slower solution with the GFS
being the "middle ground". However, by Saturday night, they come
back together as the low moves inland. Given the discrepancy, the
GFS/GFS ensemble was the favored model.

Farther west, a Kamchatka low is advancing toward the western
Aleutians Saturday morning and models are in decent agreement
regarding this system. The similarity in models quickly dissipates
as the NAM takes the quicker path into the eastern Bering. The
GFS and EC maintain a similar track until they finally all come
together again Sunday evening.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Downsloping off the Chugach Range this afternoon is
keeping the precipitation nearby, but out of the terminal. It is
also producing a wind shear layer where the northerly surface
winds abruptly are switching to the southeast. There is a
question as to wind and precipitation type late tonight through
Saturday afternoon. At this time, and this could change, it
appears that strong southeasterly winds will not make it into the
terminal. However, winds will switch south to southwest in the
afternoon which will usher in the colder air and turn
precipitation type to all snow.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The very impressive storm cycle continues this evening as another
powerful storm force low tracks toward the North Gulf Coast. The
warm seclusion is currently tracking north from 55N, and was
observed to hurricane force in the sting jet, with 65 knots at the
core. The associated storm force front is already impacting the
coast with gales in Prince William Sound. Heavy rain is impacting
the coast with over 2.2" of rain at Girdwood, and over 3" in
Seward over 24 hours. This bomb mature cyclone was not anticipated
to reach such strength yesterday, and as such, the track now looks
to go through Prince William Sound tomorrow morning (Saturday).
This eastward shift in the track changes everything, as now the
isallobaric maxima is going to be west of Anchorage and Turnagain
Arm, with the strongest core of southerly onshore winds moving
through PWS into the Copper Basin. Chinook type winds will move
through the Copper Basin tomorrow and will likely impact all areas
including Glennallen where temps may rise to near 40 degrees with
rain showers. Farther west, thermals will not be quite as warm as
anticipated yesterday, so it seems more likely that rain will mix
snow by midday, then turning to all snow in the late
afternoon/early evening. Any snow accumulations will generally be
light given the weak south/southwest winds originating off
Turnagain Arm.

The forecast gets trickier Saturday night into Sunday as the next
low moves in behind the first. This low is still churning and
developing in the North Pacific, but one thing is clear. The
eastward track of this first low will allow for all snow wherever
it moves inland, which right now ranges from Anchorage to Eureka
(the main snow band). The possibility exists of a decent snow
accumulation of 4-6" wherever the band sets up, but right now
there is quite a bit of uncertainty with that. For now took a
middle ground approach Saturday night with likely snow in this
forecast from Anchorage to the western Copper Basin. Stay tuned...

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Friday
night through Monday)...
Currently a deformation zone from a low in the Gulf of Alaska is
sitting over the eastern parts of zones 161 and 152. This has
prompted the issuance of winter weather advisories for snow in
those areas until 6AM tomorrow morning. To the northwest of this
feature, a low spins along the coast of the Yukon Delta. The
backside of this low is feeding cold air into southwest AK, which
will end precipitation and cool temperatures, especially in
interior areas, until Sunday.

Sunday afternoon the next round of weather approaches from the
Bering Sea in the form of a low pressure system that will be
riding along the north side of the Aleutian Islands. This low
will warm temperatures and send precip into SW AK, with perhaps a
band of stronger winds, around 30mph, just reaching the coast.
Model uncertainty is still high with the placement of this low as
it moves east towards the mainland, so there are not yet specifics
on the forecast for this low.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3/Friday
night through Monday)...
The outer reaches of a storm force low are beginning to reach the
western Aleutians. This system will be the big weather maker the
next few days, as it is broad in scale so it will encompass most
of the Aleutian Island chain as it pushes east through the
weekend.

The main impact of this low will be high winds and seas, especially
on the south side of the western Aleutians. Storm force winds are
expected on the Pacific side of the western Aleutians tomorrow
night. Corresponding wave heights were added to the forecast last
night, and continuity was kept with that forecast. So, we are
still going for wave heights exceeding 40 feet. Due to strong
winds and high seas, this area should be avoided.

This low will then weaken as it tracks east through the weekend,
though it will remain intense enough to bring gale force winds to
the Aleutian Islands as it goes.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7)...
(Tuesday through Friday)

The active pattern continues is this afternoon's weather theme, as
model continuity continues to be moderate to good, as a series of
storms affect the region. Our first contender in the extended is a
rapidly deepening storm (into the lower 950s mb range) lifting
north into the Gulf. This system will pull some tropical moisture
into our neck of the woods, with current forecast values being
some 300 to 400 percent above normal. At this time, the heaviest
precipitation looks to be along the coastal locations along the
Gulf, but, some fairly respectable precipitation totals look to
make it into much of Southcentral as well. Additionally, one
notable change today is all models have trended cooler with some
wintry type precipitation a legitimate possibility. As is typical
with these deep systems, strong winds for the upper elevations and
marine waters are extremely likely, with sustained storm force
winds a good bet.

Our attention then turns to another storm, with this one passing
south of the Aleutians on Tuesday, moving into the Gulf on
Wednesday. Most of the heavy precipitation with this 950s mb low
looks to stay south of the chain, but some storm force winds are
possible for the southern coastal waters. By the time it enters
the Gulf it will have weakened some, as current forecasts have it
in the lower 960s with a further south track compared to
yesterday. These two things are noteworthy, because the tropical
moisture will still make its way into Southcentral, but the warm
advection now looks to be less aggressive, with the majority of
the precipitation looking to be snow (hope I didn't just jinx
that), but for you snow lovers this could be one of our best
potentials this year IF...the current forecast holds. It's still
several days out but the trend towards this has been consistent
the last several model runs.

Looking just beyond the extended forecast range, it looks like
more of the same is on tap for us...so stay tuned!
