.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
Our stagnant pattern aloft continues as a broad and diffuse long-
wave trough sits over much of the state. The most active portion
of the trough is the upper low pressure over the southwest
mainland, moving into the interior. Otherwise, the long-wave
pattern is amplifying to the west. A strong system in the vicinity
of Kamchatka is pumping up a western Bering ridge causing more of
a split-flow pattern. The southern stream jet is well south of the
Aleutians, flowing into a north Pacific upper low pressure, which
looks to be the focus for active weather around southern Alaska in
the short term.

For sensible weather, the cold-core low aloft was the focus for
diurnal showers yesterday, there wasn't much forcing in the
cyclonic flow. The low presence and southwest flow aloft has
ensured a steady stream of moisture to the area, continuing our
gloomy spring.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
There is good agreement with a small pattern shift as guidance
moves the current upper low into northern Alaska. The resultant
pattern is one where the dominant trough is a complex one, over
the northern Pacific. There are a lot of moving parts with this
setup, yet guidance remains pretty close to one another. All the
synoptic guidance builds a ridge in over the weekend. The
differences come on how much influence the trough to the south
has, and how far north the cyclonic flow makes it.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

An upper level disturbance near the southern tip of the Kenai
Peninsula is moving northward today. This is bringing some light
rain to the Kenai Peninsula and will keep a chance of rain in
Anchorage through the Susitna Valley. There will remain some
downslope winds over the Chugach mountains which is the main
reason POPs are remaining at a chance level for Anchorage and
Matanuska Valley.

The upper level flow becomes nearly due south with warm advection
tonight through Thursday night. This will bring in more light
rainfall tomorrow across much of Southcentral.

On Friday, an upper level ridge will push its way in from the
east and bring in warmer temperatures though cloud cover may be a
bit more difficult to lose.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA...
A weak ridge developed across much of the southwest mainland in
the wake of low pressure moving to the Lower Yukon Valley.
The stable air mass across the Kuskokwim Delta is expected to
bring brief patchy fog this morning, elsewhere mid level clouds
stream north ahead of the next front moving toward the Alaska
Peninsula. The front progresses across the Alaska Peninsula this
morning spreading rain and gusty easterly flow across Bristol Bay
this afternoon. The front continues north tonight; however, rain
will be light as the boundary becomes diffuse across the Kuskokwim
region with the associated low on a very slow track. Scattered to
numerous rain showers will continue to develop across the Southwest
through the end of the week as the surface low approaches the
eastern Alaska Peninsula late Friday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS...
A ridge remains dominant across much of the Bering through
Thursday then begins to shift northwest on Friday. The Western
Aleutians and Eastern Bering will be the exception as low
pressure systems try to work north. The jet stream activates on
Friday which helps to push low pressure further north. Light rain
spreads across the Eastern Bering on Friday as a ridge amplifies
across the Gulf of Alaska and Southeast, allowing a low center to
ride up to the Alaska Peninsula.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
The long term forecast begins Friday as a persistent upper level ridge
over Western Canada and the Yukon becomes undercut by an upper
level trough moving from the North Pacific into the Gulf of
Alaska. This will act to tilt the ridge NW into Southcentral
leading to decreasing cloud cover and warming temperatures during
the day. High temps on Friday look to top out in the upper 50's to
low 60's in Anchorage and the Mat-Su while portions of the Copper
River Basin should see temperatures approaching the 70 degree
mark as mostly sunny skies are expected there.

This first taste of summer will be short lived as the trough
continues to under cut the ridge acting to push the ridge axis
further east into Canada allowing an upper level low to build back
over the southeastern Bering and Aleutians. This will bring a
return of cooler, cloudier, and wetter weather to the southern
half of the state this weekend into early next week as several
systems move through the region. Past mid-week, models become
muddled regarding the placement of specific features but most show
a persistent upper level low over the Gulf and Northern Pacific. There
are some hints of this feature weakening and breaking down
allowing more seasonable weather to take over by the end of next
week, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Stay tuned for
