Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
There are three upper level lows affecting Southern Alaska this
afternoon: one near 170 E, another in the eastern Gulf of Alaska,
and the last in the northern Bering Sea.

At the surface, a gale-force occluded low is pushing northward
from the eastern Gulf of Alaska. A gale-force low is moving into
the southern Bering, and a stronger storm-force low is found near
the Kamchatka Peninsula which is undercutting the Aleutian Low.

In the Southwest mainland, drier onshore flow is breaking up the
stratus over the Bristol Bay region.

In Prince William Sound, the next round of rain is working into
the coastal regions and the surrounding Chugach mountains. In the
lee of the mountains, including the Anchorage area, only mid-to-high
level overcast is making it across.

Challenges for the weekend will include the off-chance of
precipitation making it over the Chugach mountains into the lee-
side population centers as well as temperatures. MOS guidance
has been showing higher temperatures than what seems reasonable.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in good agreement for the short-term again. A blend was
used for both East and West regions, however the ECMWF was the
preferred model for placing the front in the Gulf of Alaska.

PANC...VFR conditions and light and variable winds are expected
to prevail.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA...
The weak wave that has pushed through western Prince William
Sound has brought light rain to the area with light snow at higher
elevations. This precip will diminish throughout the night as
high pressure builds in over mainland Alaska. The majority of the
precip will be stopped by the coastal ranges but there is a chance
some could sneak in over the Anchorage area. However, with all
the dry air in place it should be nothing more than sprinkles this
evening changing to flurries tonight. Conditions will clear out
Saturday allowing for max temps to rise well into the 40s for many
locations around Southcentral Alaska and this nice weather should
last through Sunday as well. Sunday night into Monday a front
will move through the Gulf from the south bringing rain back to
the north Gulf coast.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The snow showers across parts of Southwest Alaska are continuing
to weaken and slide east this afternoon. Any remnant patches of
flurries will end by sunset this evening. Skies have already begun
to clear across much of Southwestern Alaska today, and webcams
show that trend arriving to King Salmon already this afternoon.
Winds across much of the region will remain light and
northeasterly, but shouldn't keep temperatures down. Flow aloft
will be southerly and start to usher in warmer air. This warmer
air aloft, and longer solar heating should help most lower
elevation communities to remain above freezing by Saturday.
Temperatures should then raise to the 40s by Monday, save for
locations along the YK Coast, as winds shift southerly ahead of an
approaching front in the Bering.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

Currently a stalled out, and weakening, low pressure system a few
hundred miles north of Adak has a front stretched out from the
Central Bering, south to Nikolski. This front is bringing rain and
overall windy conditions to the central Aleutian chain. High
pressure that is building to the west from the mainland will help
to push this low north before it completely fades away Sunday. The
next low and weather front will slide in from Kamchatka late on
Sunday. This weather system looks stronger, but slower, than the
current system and is expected to bring more rain and wind at the
start. As the front moves east, rain/snow will return despite
temperatures hovering around freezing.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
The long term forecast begins Sunday evening with a large
recently vertically stacked low tracking into the western
Aleutians and a weak rex block pattern over mainland Alaska with
an upper level ridge centered over southern Alaska and an upper
low to the south centered around 48N. The upper level ridge will
gradually fade out Sunday night and Monday as the western upper
low tracks northeast to cover the western and central Bering, the
upper low to the south of the Gulf lifts slowly north and a cold
upper trough persists over the northern Yukon Territory, eastern
Brooks Range and Yukon Flats.

A strong westerly jet will bring in the next developing north
Pacific low skirting just to the south of the western and central
Aleutians Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, the upper low south
of the Gulf will track north to around 55N 145W by Tuesday
afternoon and then turn west to track into the southwesterly Gulf
on Wednesday as a secondary low/upper trough rotating around it
swings into the southeast Gulf. Inland, a ridge aloft stretching
from British Columbia up to northern Gulf coast will shift north
to extend from the Yukon Territory into interior Alaska on
Tuesday.

On Wednesday night, the Aleutian low's track will turn to the
southeast to then become caught up in the circulation of the broad
multi-center Gulf low on Thursday. The general pattern of a large
upper low centered in the Gulf and another over the western
Aleutians and western Bering will continue through at least Friday
with models trending towards strengthening the upper level ridge
in between and building it up over Mainland Alaska sometime around
Saturday or Sunday.
