The storm system lifting out of the southern plains will push a warm front north through the Ozarks. This combination of frontal lift, Gulf moisture and limited instability will bring the potential for periods of moderate to heavy rainfall across the Ozarks from late tonight through Thursday morning. The National Weather Service in Springfield has issued a * Flash Flood Watch for portions of southeast Kansas and Missouri, including the following areas, in southeast Kansas, Bourbon, Cherokee, and Crawford. In Missouri, Barry, Barton, Benton, Camden, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Dent, Douglas, Greene, Hickory, Howell, Jasper, Laclede, Lawrence, Maries, McDonald, Miller, Morgan, Newton, Oregon, Ozark, Phelps, Polk, Pulaski, Shannon, St. Clair, Stone, Taney, Texas, Vernon, Webster, and Wright. * From late tonight through Thursday morning * A storm system moving out of the southern plains will bring another round of rainfall to the region tonight through Thursday morning. As a warm front moves north through the Ozarks, rounds of showers and scattered storms will bring between 1 and 3 inches of rainfall to the region. * Flash flooding is expected as the rainfall from this system falls on already saturated soil. The combination of ongoing flooding, saturated soils and terrain across the region will combine to cause most of the rain with this system to become runoff. This will produce flash flooding where the heaviest rains occur. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Storm total rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected with the highest amounts occurring north of the Highway 60 corridor. Amounts approaching 4 inches may occur across the Lake of the Ozarks and Rolla regions of central Missouri. Monitor the latest forecast for potential adjustments to the axis of heaviest rainfall. * Flash flooding will become increasingly likely where the heaviest rainfall occurs due to soils already being saturated. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Springfield MO 251 AM CDT Tue May 2 2017 ...More Rainfall and Flooding Concerns Late Tonight Through Wednesday Night Across The Missouri Ozarks Region... .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 218 AM CDT Tue May 2 2017 High pressure over the region this morning will begin to slowly lift out of the area through the day today. This will be aided by another storm system that will take shape across the southern plains and take aim on the Ozarks once again. Temperatures and moisture will be on the rise today as southerly winds bring Gulf moisture back towards the region, reaching around 70. As the the storm system develops and moves across northern Texas a warm front will begin to lift northward across Arkansas. The warm front will begin to move into the Ozarks later tonight around or just before Midnight. This front will bring another round of rain and scattered storms to the area. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 218 AM CDT Tue May 2 2017 Rain and scattered storms should be ongoing once again through the day Wednesday and continue into early Thursday morning. Current expectations with this system will be for an additional 1-3 inches of rainfall. There is some indication that the frontal lift will act to enhance the QPF where CAPE is limited. This will allow for some embedded thunderstorms which may produce rainfall rates in excess of an inch per hour at times. Despite the expectation of more stratiform rainfall with this system, the antecedent saturated soil conditions, ongoing flooding and terrain effects across the Ozarks would bring the potential for flash flooding to occur. As a result a Flash Flood Watch will be issued for all of the Missouri Ozarks and extreme southeastern Kansas from 06z Wednesday through 12z Thursday. The storm system will lift out of the region during the day Thursday. A period of quiet and finally dry weather is then expected from Thursday evening through the coming weekend. Temperatures will be cool with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s and the weather will be dry through Monday morning. A clipper type system moves across mainly north cental Missouri towards the middle of next week but looks to quickly transition through the area with light accumulations only noted in the models. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night) Issued at 1134 PM CDT Mon May 1 2017 Pilots can expect VFR conditions at area terminals tonight and Tuesday.
