Area Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED
National Weather Service Seattle WA
820 PM PDT Thu May 4 2017

.SYNOPSIS...There is an unstable air mass with showers and scattered
thunderstorms over Western Washington this evening. A cold front will
reach the area Friday morning. An upper trough will weaken and move
inland with showers decreasing Saturday. A weak ridge of high
pressure will move over the region Sunday and Monday.

&&

.SHORT TERM...A severe thunderstorm watch that includes Lewis,
Thurston and Pierce Counties continues til 11pm this evening. The
first batch of thunderstorms that moved through late this afternoon
gave quite a few areas stormy weather, with a lot of power outages.
At 8pm there were more thunderstorms in Lewis county moving north,
so those will move through the Seattle Tacoma metro area around 9pm.
Low pressure over the Willamette extends into Eastern Washington
with pressures falling rapidly over the Columbia Basin this evening.
Areas west of the Cascades should see the air stabilize overnight
as some marine air pushes in. The upper level trough of low pressure
offshore will continue moving east through Friday and so Friday will
be a showery and cooler day, and then the showers will decrease for
the weekend as a cool air mass lingers. The two day warm stretch was
brief, and the next ridge looks quite weak, but temps will recover
a bit by the end of the weekend or into Monday.

.LONG TERM...After a weak ridge Monday an upper trough will develop
just offshore around the middle of next week. Showers or rain is a
good bet by Wednesday night or Thursday. Temperatures should be near
or maybe a little below average.

&&

.AVIATION...An upper trough will slowly approach the coast tonight
and Friday with southerly flow aloft. At the surface, onshore flow
will increase as a thermal trough shifts inland and high pressure
builds offshore. The air mass is moist and unstable.

Scattered thunderstorms should end late this evening with more
stable air arriving. Low clouds at the coast will spread into the
interior tonight as onshore flow increases. The low clouds should
break up in the afternoon, at least for inland areas.

KSEA...A threat of thunder will continue until late this evening
then more stable air will arrive. A marine push will spread low
clouds to the terminal after midnight tonight. The low clouds
should break up Friday afternoon. Northerly wind 5-10 knots will
become southerly after midnight tonight. Schneider

&&

.MARINE...A marine push will increase onshore flow tonight. Gale
warnings are in effect for the Central and East Strait but they
are looking iffy. Gradients are supposed to increase overnight so
the warning will be allowed to continue for now.

Winds will ease a bit diurnally Friday morning then rise again
for another chance of gales in the Strait Friday afternoon and
evening. A cold front moving inland will also help increase
onshore flow later in the day Friday. A gale watch is in effect.
Elsewhere, small craft advisory winds are likely most waters
tonight or Friday with moderate onshore.

Onshore flow will continue this weekend and then ease a bit
Monday and Tuesday. Schneider
