...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO
3 PM MST SUNDAY...

* LOCATION...The Western Mosquito Range in eastern Chaffee County
  above 9000 feet, including Trout Creek Pass.

* CAUSE AND TIMING...A storm system will spread Pacific moisture
  into the region overnight through Sunday afternoon. 

* SNOW ACCUMULATION...4 to 8 inches.

* WIND...Easterly 10 to 20 mph.

* IMPACT...travel will be hazardous due to snow, poor visibilities
  and icy, snow covered roads.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

This Winter Weather Advisory means that snow will cause hazardous
travel conditions. Try to postpone or reroute travel if possible.
If you must travel, leave early, travel slowly and don't follow 
too close. Carry winter survival gear such as food, water, extra 
clothes, blankets, a shovel, flashlight, phone and portable 
charger.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday Night)

...Critical Fire Weather Conditions expected for the plains Friday
and potentially again on Saturday for southern sections...
...Strong winds and snow for the mountains...

Increasing southwest flow on Friday will lead to record to near
record high temperatures across region...particularly across the
plains.  Records are 76 in 2016 for PUB...70 in 1962 for COS...and
60 in 1962 for ALS.  ALS may not quite reach their record...but
current forecast has both KCOS and KPUB breaking theirs by a 3-4
degree range.  Winds will increase in response to lee troffing which
pushes eastward in the afternoon as some weak energy moves through
the flow.  This should allow gusty winds to spread eastward across
the plains leading to critical fire weather conditions for most of
the plains during the afternoon.  There will be some pockets of
lighter winds here and there...but overall coverage and duration is
sufficient to include all of the plains into a Red Flag Warning for
tomorrow afternoon.  Winds decouple during the evening...though the
approach of an upper level trof on the west coast will spread strong
winds into the higher peaks of the mountains overnight.  There is
some potential for high winds to develop Friday night across the
higher peaks...though for now it looks stay fairly high up.  Model
cross-sections show quite a bit of forward shear though it does go a
bit towards reverse shear late Friday night.  This is when 4 km NAM
is showing some higher wind gusts spreading down the eastern slopes
of the southeast mountains...but for now it appears to stay pretty
high up.  We appear to lack much of a mtn top stable layer as well.
Will have to watch this period for a potential high wind
highlights...but given the marginal look to it...will refrain from
one right now.  Meanwhile...should see snow ramp up across the
southwest and central mountains.

Saturday snow should increase across the continental divide...and
could see some high end advisory/low end warning criteria amounts
for the event.  There is some convective potential Saturday
afternoon which could lead to some heavy snow bursts as well.  Given
that the upper low is taking a more southern track through southern
CO...forcing may be weaker with this system which may help limit
accumulations to more in the advisory range.  System also starts out
fairly warm...which should restrict the 12+" amounts to the higher
elevations.  Per collaboration with surrounding offices will hold
off on any winter highlights for now.  Meanwhile...a return of gusty
winds and low humidities will be possible for southern portions of
the southeast plains on Saturday ahead of this next system.  How far
north critical fire weather conditions will expand will depend on
the timing of the cold front which is expected to drop to along the
Arkansas River valley by 00z.  For now have issued a Fire Weather
Watch for the southern tier counties...but its possible that later
shifts may need to expand this northward if the front timing slows
down.  Meanwhile...should see rain and snow spread into the Palmer
Divide/Pikes Peak region during the afternoon. -KT

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Thursday)

Sunday...Models indicate that the upper low will be located over
southern CA and the CA Baja Sunday morning, with snow continuing
across the mts and southern foothills through the day as the low
slowly edges to the east. General trends are to have the pcpn
gradually diminish through the aftn and eve, but then models diverge
on what the effect will be for south-central and southeast Colorado
beginning late Sunday night. New snow amounts forecast for the day
Sunday are ranging from 2 to 6 inches for the mts, with perhaps up
to an inch along the I-25 corridor. As for temps, expect a very cool
day with max readings in the 30s and 40s for all areas.

Monday through Thursday...The GFS and EC models do not agree on what
will happen across the forecast area for the next work week, as the
GFS shows the upper low tracking across southern AZ and NM through
the period, well south of the state. The GFS keeps the forecast area
dry through Thursday save for a minor disturbance producing isolated
showers along the ContDvd Wed night. The EC, on the other hand,
places the upper low slightly further north, which would keep the
threat of pcpn for all of southern Colorado Monday and Tuesday, then
dry Wednesday and Thursday. Felt that the extended procedure was a
little heavy handed with POPs so blended with the GFS to back POPs
off a bit. This resulted in isolated POPs along the southern tier
through Monday. Max temps are expected to gradually warm through mid-
week, with generally 40s and 50s for all areas. Temps along the
CO/KS border are forecast to climb to near 60F for Wed and Thu. Moore

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central AND southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...TONIGHT

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday THROUGH Wednesday

At or above record temperatures, low relative humidity levels and
breezy west to southwest winds across the southeast Colorado Plains
will lead to high fire danger on Friday. Care should be taken to
prevent any fire starts Friday. The threat of high fire danger
continues on Saturday across the southeastern corner of the state,
before a cold front drops south across the plains.

The expected warm and breezy weather on Friday is ahead of a
potent weather system that will bring snow to the Continental
Divide starting Friday night, and then continue through early
Sunday. Rain and snow showers will spread east across the High
Mountain Valleys through the Eastern Mountains and immediate
adjacent Plains Saturday afternoon and night, before precipitation
diminishes from northeast to southwest through the day Sunday.

Snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches will be possible across the
higher terrain of the Continental Divide through this period,
with 4 to 8 inches of snow possible across the Eastern Mountains
and 1 to 4 inches of snow possible across the High Mountain Valleys
and immediate adjacent Plains. In addition to the snow, westerly
winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph across the higher
terrain will lead to hazardous travel across the higher mountain
passes Friday night through Saturday night.
