As of 2 AM EDT...Hurricane Irma continues to remain a powerful Category 5 hurricane moving west northwest towards Southeast Bahamas. A Hurricane Warning is now in effect for all of South Florida through Monday morning. In addition, a Storm Surge Warning is in effect for all coastal areas in South Florida. Here are the latest key messages as they relate to South Florida: 1. Hurricane Irma is a serious threat to South Florida and potentially deadly situation. 2. The primary threats for South Florida continues to be the potential for destructive winds and life-threatening storm surge. Additional threats include flooding rains, isolated tornadoes, significant beach erosion and surf, coastal flooding, and life- threatening rip currents. 3. The time window of greatest concerns for Hurricane Irma continues to be early Saturday morning (pre-dawn) through Monday. 4. Heed evacuation orders if given from local, county, or state governmental agencies. NOW IS THE TIME TO FINALIZE HURRICANE PREPARATIONS. BY FRIDAY NIGHT ALL PREPARATIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY SHOULD BE COMPLETED. Today...Plenty of sunshine ahead of Hurricane Irma will favor high heat indices across South Florida ranging from 105 to 108. The northeast winds begin to increase providing breeze to windy conditions this afternoon. There is a chance of a few showers and thunderstorms developing this afternoon mainly near the Lake region and gradually progress west late in the afternoon. Finalize all your hurricane preparations no later than this evening. If you are in an evacuation zone or live in a mobile home, you should be moving to a safe location no later than Friday evening. If you are not in an area under evacuation orders, you should shelter in place during the storm. The weather should start to deteriorate over South Florida pre-dawn Saturday as Irma approaches the area.
