Patchy low stratus clouds are reducing ceilings to MVFR/IFR range
early this morning at a few sites. Otherwise, VFR conditions
prevail across the remainder of the area. Numerous showers and
some thunderstorms will spread northward into the area as the
tropical low over the Gulf moves toward the coast, affecting areas
south of I-20 by late morning/afternoon and reaching locations
farther north and west later tonight. Additional scattered
SHRA/TSRA will develop farther north across central MS and
northeast LA during the afternoon hours. Occasional visibility
reductions in heavy bands of rain are possible. NE/E winds may be
gusty at times on Tuesday, with gusts over 20 kt possible. Tuesday
night, ceiling reductions will become possible, especially at
sites over the southern half of the area. /DL/

.DISCUSSION...

Through tonight:

Main focus during the short term and beyond is on the
tropical/subtropical low moving northward across the Gulf of
Mexico. A stalling front is now located generally from the AR/LA
border to around the Golden Triangle this morning. To the north of
this front, GOES-16 TPW values are around 1" - 1 1/4". South of
the front, a moisture rich environment exists with values closer
to 2". There's also a slight surface dewpoint discontinuity across
the boundary, with upper 60s dewpoints to the north and 70s to
the south. The main driver for rain chances today and tonight,
however, will be the low over the Gulf. Rain bands, which are
already flirting with the coast this morning, will begin to
advance into the Pine Belt by late morning/afternoon, spreading
closer to the I-20 corridor by early evening. In addition during
the afternoon, we'll likely see convection form farther north
along a convergent axis between the surface front and the rain
shield associated with the Gulf low. This activity will be more
diurnal in nature, and will likely taper off/lose intensity into
tonight, while the rain shield with the low will continue through
the night. Rain will likely limit high temps in the southeast
today, so I opted to cut guidance in the Pine Belt to account for
this.

The heaviest rain in association with the low over the Gulf likely
will not arrive until Wednesday, but there's potential for a few
heavier rain bands to begin reaching the Pine Belt by this
afternoon. Also, given the tropical airmass in place across much of
the area, localized flooding cannot be ruled out with the convection
farther north this afternoon. Thus, we will begin advertising a
limited flooding threat in the HWO/graphics over roughly the SE half
of the area beginning this afternoon, while maintaining an elevated
threat within this area across portions of south Mississippi (mainly
the Hwy 84 corridor and south). In addition, we will expand the
Flash Flood Watch northward (roughly another row of counties) and
push back the beginning to 18Z today, though the greatest potential
will begin tomorrow. More details on that threat below... /DL/

Wednesday into early next week:

Wednesday through Friday there is now relatively good model
consensus for the tropical/subtropical low center to move inland
in the vicinity of SE TX/SW LA (Wednesday) and then track in a
more-or-less northward curved path near the eastern border of our
forecast area (Thursday through Friday). Many subtropical
characteristics of the system will ensure showers and embedded
thunderstorms associated with the system are mainly east of the
system, and in some cases spread well to the east. This aspect
will keep rain chances high for the region from the middle to end
of the work week. Model consensus now suggests best moisture
transport (at least well-inland moisture advection) will set up
right into our central and southern zones during the day Wednesday
and into Wednesday night and rain chances have been upped
drastically in some of these areas with lots of clouds and rain
perhaps holding highs below 80 degrees in a few spots. As alluded
to in the short term discussion, the flash flood watch has been
pulled north a little to account for trends but it is certainly
possible subsequent shifts will need to pull the northern edge of
the watch up even more if trends hold. Instability will likely be
quite limited on Wednesday owing to relatively cool surface and
warm temperatures aloft but there still could be a few rumbles of
thunder.

By Thursday the intense moisture advection axis will likely shift
to our east but expected strong and moist southerly flow over the
bulk of our region will keep rain chances high. The probable lack
of a widespread rain shield will allow temperature to get up into
the 80s in most areas with some surface destabilization
resulting. Taking in concert with somewhat troubling low to mid
layer wind shear on the NE/E side of the low center this
instability may drive pockets of rotating thunderstorms with non-
negligible tornado potential. The Storm Prediction Center concurs
with this threat and has introduced a marginal risk for severe
weather to mainly cover this tornado threat. In addition,
atmospheric precipitable water values well in excess of 2 inches
will be conducive for efficient rain processes in showers and
storms and a limited flooding threat will be expanded to all
areas.

Thursday night the coverage of showers and isolated storms will
likely diminish some as widespread precipitation probably pulls
back west toward the low center. However, by Friday, the consensus
indications of the curved path of the low may keep our region in
a zone of high moisture transport, and thus rather widespread
shower and isolated storm coverage, on the south and southeast
side of the system. There is certainly some potential the
associated flooding threat could increase and concentrate toward
western and northern zones as we go through Friday and Friday
night if the consensus track holds. However, given inherent
uncertainties this far out will just maintain advertising a
limited flooding threat for the whole area during this time
period.

Hopefully by Saturday rain chances and the associated heavy rain
threat will be ramping down some, but certainly some precipitation
chances will continue. This will remain the case through at least
Sunday night as model consensus is gradually increasing that a
cold front will push down into the region from the north and into
the very soupy air mass in place. Fortunately the tame lapse rates
will likely limit potential for any severe weather this weekend.

Yesterday the idea of this theoretical cold front clearing south
of the area was not well-represented by models, but it is looking
more plausible after examining the breadth of solutions tonight.
Cross your fingers on that outcome becomes if it comes to pass
some extremely pleasant air (by late June standards) could flow
south into the region and provide the forecast area with a much
needed dry stretch of weather. /BB/
