Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Former Tropical Storm Harvey will move north across Tennessee
and Kentucky today. A weak front will stall across southern
North Carolina later today, focusing the potential for strong
to severe thunderstorms, including isolated tornadoes. The
front will retreat northward tonight, however a warm and humid
airmass should allow showers and thunderstorms to continue
through Saturday. High pressure will bring dry weather to the
area Sunday through Tuesday. Another cold front may bring more
thunderstorms by next Wednesday and Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Friday...The remants of Harvey will move north toward
the Ohio Valley today into tonight. Increasing SW flow behind a warm
front stretching out from this remnant low will come against NE flow
as high pressure builds south pushing a cold front into NC through
today. Some low clouds and fog were fairly widespread in the moist
air and weak isentropic lift ahead of the warm front, but later
today this boundary will converge with cold front coming down from
the north to provide a focal point for strong convective development
and the possibility of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. NAM is
showing a low developing just west of our local forecast area along
this boundary with a line of convection extending south from the low
reaching into the I-95 corridor later this afternoon and then
pushing east but lifting off to the northeast. SPC has outlined this
area with a slight risk of severe weather which extends east to
cover most of our forecast area with slight or marginal risk for
severe weather with a threat of tornadoes and damaging winds.

With heating of the day and plenty of warm moist air moving
north behind warm front expect CAPE values to reach up near 1000
to 1500 J/kg especially if we can get some breaks in the
clouds. Temps should reach into the mid 80s with dewpoint temps
into the 70s in warm sector over our area. This will combine
with a decent LLJ jet up to 35 kts to produce increasing shear
as sfc winds back to the E-SE as these boundaries meet later
this afternoon. Expect the best chc of severe weather to come
basically late this afternoon into early evening. Will have to
monitor closely exactly where this boundary will move to
decipher best threat of severe weather. For now it looks like
the best threat of tornadoes will be inland near the I-95
corridor, with a greater focus or potential for damaging wind
gusts over eastern SC where weaker shear will exist but more
instability due to greater heating and moisture. Expect these
storms to also produce torrential rain with potential of
localized QPF totals over an inch or two.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Friday...An upper level trough moving across the
Great Lakes on Saturday will pick up the remnant circulation of
former Tropical Storm Harvey and lift it from Kentucky across
Ohio on Saturday, and then through New England Sunday. At the
surface the very moist southerly flow from the Gulf of Mexico
should yield more showers and t-storms across the eastern
Carolinas on Saturday.

With Friday's warm front located well north of the area by
Saturday, our wind shear profiles won't be nearly as dangerous
looking -- although 0-6 km bulk shear values around 30 knots
should still support some convective organization into short
lines and multicell clusters. Highs in the mid 80s and dewpoints
still in the 70s should generate surface-based CAPE values of
1000-2000 J/kg.

As winds veer more southwesterly during the afternoon Saturday,
significantly drier mid-level air should begin to advect in
from the west. This should reach the Pee Dee counties first, and
showers and storms should become less numerous as precipitable
water values fall below 1.5 inches by mid-afternoon there. It
will take another 3-6 hours for this drying trend to reach the
coast. Forecast Pops ranging from 50-70 percent Saturday
(highest at the coast) decrease to 20-40 percent Saturday
evening, then below 20 percent after midnight.

Weak low pressure developing along the warm front over the Mid-
Atlantic region Saturday night should push a weak cold front
southward into the area late. Winds should veer to the west just
before daybreak Sunday. This should produce a spectacular
weather day on Sunday: mostly sunny skies and light offshore
winds should yield highs in the mid to upper 80s. A modest
seabreeze will develop during the afternoon at the beaches, but
the atmosphere should be dry enough aloft to inhibit any shower
development. Dry weather will continue Sunday night, with
radiational cooling expected to be good enough to allow lows to
reach the 60s across all but the immediate coast.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 300 PM Thursday...Amazingly, models are quite similar with
the mid-level pattern thru Tue. The exception is the NAM for Sun
when it closes off a mid-level low over GA for much of the day
which keeps the threat of pcpn across the FA. However, stayed
with a dry bias and discounted this closed low aloft. The
negatively tilted upper trof will swing north of the FA during
the day with any lingering pcpn occurring in the morning.

For Mon thru early Tue, have gone with no POPs given the FA
will be under a rather low amplitude trof with the main belt of
the upper westerlies north of the FA. As a result, a weak-modest
sfc high will migrate across the FA.

For late Tue thru Thu, look for increasing POPs with POPs
peaking during Wed into Wed night. Initially, return flow from
the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico in the low and mid levels
increases the moisture and PW count across the FA, thus giving
rise to low chance for convection. For Wed into Thu, an
amplifying upper trof will expand to the east coast. It will
drive a cold front southeastward, reaching the FA early Thu.
This will further increase the moisture from both Atl and GoM
sources with PWs above 2 inches. The mid-level vorticies
rotating thru this upper trof will further enhance convection
across the FA. For now, will go with 40 to possibly 50 POPs.

Have used a consensus of available MOS Guidance for temps thru
the period.

.AVIATION /12Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 12Z Thursday...Patchy morning low clouds and fog should
burn off quickly at the ILM airport. This should yield a few
hours of VFR/MVFR flight category conditions through the
remainder of the morning hours across the region. However a
weak backdoor front sliding southward through North Carolina
will get quite close to the area this afternoon. The front may
move across the LBT airport where winds could back around to the
east. Elsewhere a light southerly wind is expected today.

A good potential exists for strong to severe thunderstorms to
develop this afternoon as a series of upper level disturbances
pass overhead. The proximity of the front will create a broad
zone of vertical wind shear, enhancing the storms' potential to
become severe. The first wave of showers and thunderstorms
could form as early as 18Z along the seabreeze front, affecting
MYR, CRE, and ILM between 18-21Z. The second and potentially
stronger wave of thunderstorms is expected to develop in the
21-23Z timeframe along a line from FLO to LBT, with the back
edge of this activity clearing those airports between 01-03Z.

After this time the coverage of showers and storms should
decrease, although it's not possible to rule out one or two
isolated storms lingering overnight.

Extended Outlook...Showers and thunderstorms Saturday will have
the potential to produce brief IFR conditions in heavy rainfall.
Otherwise VFR conditions are expected..

Harvey and cold front moves down into NC from the north. Expect
winds to increase up to 10 to 15 kts with seas showing a slight rise
up to 3 ft. Winds and seas will be locally higher in possible strong
to severe thunderstorms into late this evening. Winds will veer back
around to the S to SW after midnight as warm front lifts farther
north.

SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Friday...The remnant low from former Tropical Storm
Harvey will spin down Saturday as it moves from Kentucky into
Ohio. Our winds should be southerly 10-12 knots on Saturday
between Harvey's low and a 1026 mb high moving off the New
England coast. A new low pressure area developing along a front
across the Mid- Atlantic region Saturday night should drive a
weak cold front through the Carolinas before sunrise Sunday
morning. This will turn winds more westerly, but with no
increase in speed. The drier air behind this feature should
finally end the rather widespread shower and t-storm activity
we will have been enduring for a couple of days.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 300 PM Thursday...For Mon thru Tue, rather benign winds
and sea conditions developing. This a result of a weak sfc pg
developing Sun and persisting through Tue as high pressure
settles across the local waters. Wind directions will mainly be
from the south to southwest through this period. Wavewatch3
does show small forerunner Irma swell reaching the local waters
during Tue with 15 second periods dominating. For now, will
continue with 2 to 3 ft seas.
