the mountains this afternoon and evening. While the main threats will
be from torrential rainfall and cloud to ground lightning, a few of
the storms could become briefly severe, capable of producing
damaging wind gusts.

North Carolina, western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina.

Temperatures in the lower to mid 90s will combine with moderate to
high levels of humidity to produce heat index values of around 100
across much of the Piedmont and foothills this afternoon. In
addition, scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to
develop across the area this afternoon and evening. While the main
threats will be from torrential rainfall and cloud to ground
lightning, a few of the storms could become briefly severe, capable
of producing damaging wind gusts.

MITCHELL AND SOUTHEASTERN YANCEY COUNTIES UNTIL 515 PM EDT...

At 422 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 9
miles northwest of Marion, or near B.R. Parkway-Little Switzerland To
Linville, moving east at 10 mph.

Locations to be impacted include...
B.R. Parkway-Little Switzerland To Linville, Mount Mitchell State
Park, B.R. Parkway-Craggy To Little Switzerland, North Cove, Busick,
Pleasant Gardens, Little Switzerland, Woodlawn and Celo.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph, pea size hail and very heavy rainfall rates
up to 2 inches per hour will be possible in these areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio and tv
stations, as well as local cable tv outlets for additional
information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.
