.SYNOPSIS...
Lake effect snow will continue across the Snowbelt into Saturday.
Arctic high pressure over the plains states will spread across
the Ohio Valley bringing frigid temperatures to the area through
the weekend. High pressure will move east of the area by Monday
and temperatures will begin to warm up rapidly.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Complicated near term scenario with regards to lake effect snow
evolution today. Current radar has shown a gradual northward drift
of the two primary snow bands over the past couple hours. The
northern band looks to be nearly stationary at this time, becoming
mainly shore parallel and perhaps up to a few miles inland across
Erie county PA. Hi-res guidance continues to show this trend of
the bands remaining nearly shore parallel or just a bit offshore
through this afternoon. Given current snowfall reports, radar and
guidance trends, went ahead and cancelled the warning for Geauga
and Lake, with the original expiration time of Noon. Any snow
should remain light across Lake county into this afternoon. Also
cancelled the advisory for Crawford county PA with little
additional snowfall expected through this afternoon. Expecting any
additional accumulations to be along/near the lake shore through
this afternoon, and will continue to hold onto the other
advisory/warnings and continue to reassess through the day.
Original discussion...
A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for Lake and northern
Geauga Counties. This is in effect until noon today. Two main
bands are ongoing across this area as of 3 AM and will continue to
wobble back and forth through the morning hours. Some areas under
these bands have already received around 4 inches of snow. Total
snowfall is expected to be around 6 to 8 inches where bands
persist before the snow moves back up the lake shore late this
morning into this afternoon.
Cuyahoga remains in a Lake Effect Snow Advisory for the extreme
northeastern portion near Euclid. The band is attempting to lift
out of Cuyahoga, but may remain over a small portion of the county
for the next couple of hours. A couple inches of additional snow
are possible in this area. The advisory will expire at noon.
Farther east, a strong convergence band has set up just inland
across Ashtabula and Erie Counties. WJET TV just south of Erie
reported 7 inches of new snow in 5 hours as of 2AM with heavy snow
ongoing. Look for this band to continue through this afternoon
with snowfall rates to 2 inches per hour at times. The band will
move back and forth across the area with an additional 4 to 6
inches expected through today, though locally higher amounts on
the order of 6 to 9 inches will be possible where the band
persists the longest.
Temperatures continue their plummet this morning with single digit
readings in most locations outside of the Snowbelt. A few
locations have reached or surpassed -10 degrees with the
windchill, so a Windchill Advisory has been issued for all
locations outside of where cloud cover and/or snow showers are
ongoing.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Lake effect snow will be ongoing this evening across portions of
the primary Snowbelt. This activity will continue through Friday
night into Saturday morning before tapering off. Several inches of
additional snow accumulation are possible where bands persist.
Elsewhere the dry arctic air will spread across the area and high
temperatures will not make it out of the teens through the
weekend. Low temperatures will plummet under mostly clear skies
tonight with several locations likely dropping below zero.
Windchill values of -10 to -15 will be widespread and a Windchill
Advisory will be needed.
Lake effect snow will return Saturday night behind another cold
front and will continue into Sunday before tapering off.
Some accumulating snow appears likely, but it is too far out to
forecast any snow totals with this next event.
Southerly flow Monday will help temperatures rise into the upper
20s to around 30 degrees.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The models are in better agreement than yesterday with the main
features. Still expecting zonal flow to set up across the CONUS
for a couple of days. The ECMWF has trended toward the GFS
solution of having low pressure pass to the north of the area
Tuesday night with a trailing cold front east of the area by
daybreak Wednesday. Tuesday will be a mild and wet day. Think most
of the precip will fall as rain Tuesday night but a brief change
to snow is possible right behind the front. What's left of the
precip will quickly move off to the east on Wednesday. Have had to
make some changes to the Thursday forecast as the models are now
showing another low heading northeast out of the Plains on
Wednesday night. Warm frontal precip will likely develop on
Thursday as the front advances. This time we will see a snow
changing to rain scenario. Cold air advection precip appears
probable on Friday with critical thicknesses eventually getting
cold enough for snow. Have used a blend of guidance for temps
during the period given the changing airmasses.

.AVIATION /18Z Friday THROUGH Wednesday/...
Most of the heavy Lake Effect snow showers are offshore. The
exception is along the immediate lakeshore from Lake County to
Ripley NY where an occasional IFR/MVFR burst of snow has been
occurring. It appears this will remain the trend into at least 06z
before slowly tapering off.
Inland locations are seeing the development of an MVFR cloud deck.
These clouds will persist until a couple hours after sunset then
dissipate. However locations closer to Lake Erie will persist
the longest. Winds will generally be southwest at 10 knots until a
surface trough passes this evening. Winds then become west to
northwest at 5 to 10 knots.
OUTLOOK...Non-VFR possible into Sunday in the snowbelt from lake
effect snow showers.

.MARINE...
Winds have continued to diminish and will let the remaining small
craft area go. Can see on satellite overnight that a lot of ice
has formed on the western basin. Suspect that there is shore ice
also forming. Westerly flow mainly under 15 knots will continue
till a trough crosses the lake Saturday night flipping the winds
to the northwest. Speeds should pick up some and may need more
small craft headlines. The northwest flow will be shortlived as a
surface ridges crosses the area on Sunday. By evening winds will
be back to the southwest. Speeds will gradually increase Monday
and Tuesday ahead of the next storm system.

At 230 PM EST, radar indicated an intense snow squall from downtown
Erie to near Northeast. This area which is near and north of
Interstate 90 will continue to see these heavier bursts of snow
through 4 pm.
