.SYNOPSIS...
Dry weather persists today as high pressure slowly moves east
of the region. An approaching warm front will bring the
potential for showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy
rainfall very late tonight into Friday morning, especially near
the south coast. A cold front moves through Southern New England
Saturday with potential for strong storms. Drier weather returns
Sunday and Monday, followed by another cold front Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
2 PM Update...
Area of high clouds continues to cross N CT/RI and along the S
coast of Mass as well as the E slopes of the Berkshires at 17Z.
Area of clear skies nosed back in across most most of the
remainder of Mass into N RI/NE CT thanks to E-W elongated ridge
across that area allowing for good subsidence. Weak sea breezes
will continue along the immediate coast, which should become
mainly southerly by around 21Z-22Z. Dewpts have dropped back to
the 50s across most areas except the immediate coast where they
hold in the lower 60s.

Noting patchy -RA on KBOX 88D radar moving across S NH as well
as along the CT coast and Long Island. However, with rather wide
T/Td spreads, little if any has reached the ground. Do note -RA
reported at KGON at 17Z.

Temps ranged from the mid 60s to lower 70s along the immediate S
coast, ranging to lower-mid 80s across the Merrimack valley down
to interior E Mass and portions of the CT valley.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
***Heavy Rain/Localized Street Flooding Potential early Friday
 morning with the greatest risk near the south coast***

Tonight into early Friday...

Convection currently forming in the OH Valley will be the focus
for remnant cold pool and mid lvl vortex which will shift E
through this evening and provide a focus for secondary
convective development along with a mesolow which will gradually
slide E through the overnight hours tonight. This warm front
will attempt to shift N into New England, but given very weak
H92 flow (generally 10-15 kt out of S), it may struggle to fully
push inland.

The biggest question will be how far N this warm front is able
to shift during the late night/early AM hours, because this will
define how far N the deep layer instability and moisture will
reach. Within the warm sector am noting PWATS as high as nearly
2.00 inches along with a deep theta-e ridge. As previous
forecaster noted, with the higher instability 50-100sm S of the
S coast of S New England, this could be a case where the deeper
convective elements shift S of the coastline and remain mostly
offshore and even somewhat usurp moisture that could be rained
out across mainland S New England. Latest mesoscale guidance (at
least the 00Z runs) supports this thinking along with the latest
ECMWF. However within any convection inland, very heavy rain is
possible, and given it could slide along the S coast, may need
to consider a FF Watch with latest update if the trend is to
push the warm front further inland than current guidance
suggests. The best chance for 1.00-2.00 inches (in short time)
is along the immediate S coast, closest to the instability and
deep layer moisture.

Also, how far north the warm front could also define the low
risk for a brief tornado or waterspout near the S coast (again,
offshore has the best chance). Noting a corridor of 1-3km
helicity values over 300 (EHI near 1.0) along with a very moist
decoupled BL. It's a low risk, but given that along-warm-
frontal convection tends to be a good synoptic/mesoscale setup
for New England tornadic development, and the development of a
mesolow enhancing the shear, this will need to be watched
closely given the low lvl moisture.

Best time for all of this activity, should it occur is between
about 4AM and 10AM local.

The rest of Friday...
After this convective/shower complex shifts E of the region in
the morning, lingering clouds are likely to limit afternoon
destabilization along with temps. Best chance for enough
instability for more showers will be across extreme W MA/CT,
closer to better lift from a cold front well to the W. Temps top
out in the mid-upper 70s, but could slide into the 80s across W
MA/CT where breaks of sun are likely to occur earliest if at
all.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Big Picture...

The large scale pattern remains locked with closed low over the Gulf
of Alaska, a ridge over the Rockies and High Plains, and a broad
trough over the Great Lakes and Northeast USA. As is normal for the
time of year, the subtropical high covers the southern tier of the
nation.

The smaller scale pattern shows shortwaves moving through the flow.
One shortwave from the Great Lakes races across New England
Saturday. Another shortwave ejects from the Gulf of Alaska low,
climbs over the top of the high, then moves east to our area midweek
next.

Model mass fields are in general agreement on the large scale
through Thursday. GFS and ECMWF mass fields are in agreement in the
smaller scale through Monday. The ECMWF diverges a little with the
effects of the later shortwave on closed low over Hudsons Bay but
otherwise follows the larger scale pattern. Thermal fields are
similar through the forecast period. This brings at least moderate
confidence in the long term forecast.

Details...

Friday night...

With the Friday low moving off to the east, our weather goes into a
short break Friday night. Moisture fields dry out above 850 mb while
the moisture lingers near the surface. Light pressure gradient. This
may allow for some clearing, mainly north and west of I-95, but with
enough low level moisture for developing areas of fog.  Air mass
remains humid with dew points in the 60s.

Saturday...

Morning fog and low clouds should burn off given the shallowness of
the moist layer.

Shortwave drives east and pushes a cold front through New England.
Cold air at 500 mb accompanies the shortwave and helps to
destabilize the airmass, as does daytime heating ahead of the front.
Wind fields are forecast to remain strong, with 25-35 knots at 850
mb and 50-60 knots at 500 mb. Upper jet is oriented across eastern
NY and Northern New England, placing us in the right entrance region
of the jet. Precipitable water values are forecast aroune 1.7
inches, which is about the 90 percent exceedence value.  All of
these factors suggest showers/thunderstorms as well as the potential
for strong storms and possible downpours. Temps at 850 mb will be
about 15C, suggesting max sfc temps in the mid 80s...cooler along
the shore and in the higher hills.

The cold front moves offshore in the evening. Northwest winds and
drier air move in Saturday night. Dew points will fall to the 50s,
except low 60s along the South Coast.

Sunday-Monday...

A second cold front drops into Northern New England Sunday, and
slows to a crawl. Some uncertainty for Monday as the GFS drops the
cold front through our area while the ECMWF keeps it stalled over
Northern New England. With high pressure building in, we would tend
toward the drier ECMWF solution.

The core of the cold air aloft moves overhead at this time, so with
any sunshine we expect deep mixing...with mixed layer heights
reaching 800 mb. Temperatures at this level would support max sfc
temps of 80-85.

Tuesday through Thursday...

The shortwave moving across from the Gulf of Alaska will connect
with a closed low over Hudsons Bay by Tuesday, then sweep across
Eastern Canada and the Northeast USA. Still questions on the timing
on this shortwave and its associated cold front, but best estimate
would bring it through during Tuesday or Tuesday night. High
pressure then builds in behind the front with drier weather

.AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Through 00Z...High confidence.
VFR. Leftover sea breezes end, shifting to S around 10 kt by
22Z.

Tonight...Moderate confidence.
VFR through 04Z-06Z. VSBYS lowering to MVFR-IFR in patchy fog.
CIGS lower to MVFR along S coast toward daybreak. Area of
-SHRA/+SHRA moves in mainly from the Mass Pike S, with heavier
rainfall after 09Z S RI terminals, possibly as far N as KBDL-
KPVD. Isolated to scattered TSTMS possible.

Friday...Moderate confidence.
MVFR-IFR CIGS/VSBYS in patchy fog and areas of SHRA/+SHRA with
embedded TSTMS. Heaviest rain likely across NE CT/RI/SE Mass to
Cape Cod during the day, but lower confidence on exact timing
and track. Conditions should improve to VFR across central and
western areas during Fri afternoon, but MVFR-IFR may linger
across RI/E Mass through 00Z. Light E-SE winds, up to 10 kt
along the S coast, shifting to SW along the S coast during the
afternoon.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF overall. SE sea breeze
will shift to S by around 21Z-22Z.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Outlook /Friday night through Tuesday/... Moderate confidence.

Friday night...

VFR but with areas of IFR in overnight fog. Light south-southwest
wind.

Saturday...

Areas of IFR in morning fog to start the day, otherwise VFR. Showers
and scattered thunderstorms will develop, mainly in the afternoon.
These would bring brief MVFR cigs/vsbys. Some heavier downpours may
generate brief IFR vsbys. Showers and thunder move off over the
ocean Saturday night with clearing skies.

Sunday-Monday...

VFR. Patchy fog each morning with potential for IFR cigs/vsbys.

Tuesday...

VFR with scattered MVFR cigs/vsbys in showers/thunderstorms. best
chance will be in the afternoon.

FORECASTER CONFIDENCE LEVELS...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.

Short Term /through Friday/...

10 AM Update...

Today and most of Tonight...High confidence.
S-SE winds about 10-15 kt. Seas will build somewhat across
the southern waters but will remain at or below 4 ft across
the open ocean.

Early Friday morning and the rest of the day...Moderate
confidence.
A cluster of showers and thunderstorms could clip the southern
ocean waters during the early to mid morning hours on Friday.
This may be accompanied by locally stronger winds to 25+ kt at
times out of the S. The persistent southerly flow through the
day could then yield seas near 5 ft mainly on the S and SE ocean
waters. This may require a late Small Craft Advisory. Otherwise,
low risk for some ocean fog mainly south of the Islands.

Outlook /Friday night through Tuesday/... Moderate confidence.

Friday night-Saturday...

A cold front approaches for Saturday afternoon/evening with showers
and scattered thunderstorms ahead of the front. Some storms could
have strong wind gusts along with the lightning.  Expect non-
thunderstorm winds to be less than 15 knots Friday night, but
increase to 25 knots at times on Saturday.  Seas will be near 5 feet
on the southern outer waters through Saturday night, less than 5
feet farther north and closer to shore. A Small Craft Advisory will
be needed.

Sunday-Monday...

Winds less than 15 knots and seas 4 feet or less.

Tuesday...

Another cold front sweeps across the waters later Tuesday or Tuesday
night. Southwest winds during the day with gusts to 20 knots,
shifting from the North Tuesday night. Seas building through the day
with 5 foot seas on the outer waters Tuesday night.

.HYDROLOGY...
As mentioned above a cluster of showers and storms moving out of
NY/NJ late this evening could clip a portion of the region
during the early-mid morning hours tomorrow. How far north these
get remains somewhat uncertain. However, should they move far
enough inland, rainfall rates of 2.00+ inches per hour are
possible, which could lead to localized Flash Flooding/Urban
flooding during this period. A Flash Flood Watch may need to be
considered, especially for areas closest to the S Coast where
the highest risk for these storms resides.
