.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic high pressure builds east from the Great Lakes through
Thursday and Friday. Very cold arctic air will dominate through
the New Year holiday weekend. A coastal storm may brush the
Cape and Islands this weekend. Cold air is expected to remain
locked in place well into next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...

Another cold front moves through tonight. Not much in the way of
clouds or precip to define it, but temperature and thickness
fields do take a nose-dive after midnight. This should bring
increasing wind and, with the cold temps brought in, lower wind
chills.

Wind chills should be single numbers below zero early in the
night and 15 to 25 below zero late at night. We will continue
the wind chill headlines as before.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...

High pressure remains to our west on Thursday, bringing
continued Northwest winds. This will mean a sunny but cool day.
Mixing will be more shallow, about 925 mb, with temps at that
level equiv to -25C or lower at 850 mb. This would support max
sfc temps of 10-14F, possibly colder in northern Mass and the
hills. This has record implications...please note our climate
section.

Cold air and wind at least 12 knots favor ocean effect clouds
and snow showers, and a northwest wind favors the snow showers
to remain offshore although within sight of the Outer Cape. Were
the winds to turn from 340 degrees then the Outer Cape could be
hit with snow showers...and a wind from 360 degrees could bring
show showers into the Mid-Cape.

Cold and dry Thursday night with diminishing wind as high
pressure builds over the region. Northern stream upper shortwave
moves over the Great Lakes overnight, and may generate
increasing high clouds over New England after midnight.
Overnight min temps should be as cold as tonight if not a little
colder. Lingering northwest surface wind will continue to
generate ocean effect snow showers east of Massachusetts.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Very cold temperatures persist through this forecast period
* Latest model runs suggest that potential coastal storm this
  weekend will remain offshore, but situation still needs to be
  monitored

Discussion...

Good model consensus remains for continuation of a strong PNA
pattern with long wave upper trough axis over east central North
America through this weekend and into next week. This will keep
our region firmly entrenched in arctic air. Medium range models
and their ensembles depict a strong short wave passage this
weekend but probably too progressive and not enough amplitude to
phase with southern stream energy. The trend has been for the
surface low to be further offshore. Thus, we may see little more
than flurries with upper short wave trough passage in southern
New England. Nevertheless, it may be still a little too
premature to totally dismiss a coastal storm, since the energy
packets at play are currently passing through the Arctic and
Pacific Ocean, regions with limited upper air data sites. We
have kept low chance POPs for Saturday and Saturday night as
still indicated by model blend guidance. Whether there is any
snow or not, the weekend trough passage will open the door to a
reinforcing shot of arctic air.

Friday...Increasing clouds along with cold air mass to start
will likely keep highs in the teens.

Friday night...Not as cold due to clouds but still probably
subzero over NW interior.

Saturday and Saturday night...Most likely scenario at this time
looks to be flurries from passing upper trough. Although looking
less likely based on model trends over the last 24 to 48 hours,
cannot totally rule out a coastal low close enough to produce
measurable snow. Have retained low chance POPs for this time
period. There could also be a somewhat higher chance of snow
over the outer Cape due to potential ocean effect enhancement.

Sunday through Tuesday...Other than possibly some ocean effect
snow showers over the outer Cape during Sunday morning, it looks
to remain cold and dry with a reinforcing shot of arctic air.

.AVIATION /20Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...
  Low - less than 30 percent.
  Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
  High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Thursday Night/...High confidence.

VFR conditions should persist through Thursday night. The main
question will be whether ocean effect snow showers could move
into Outer Cape Cod with 2000 foot cigs and reduced vsbys in
snow.

Winds will strengthen tonight behind a cold front, with Thursday
gusts of 25 knots in the west and 25-30 knots possible in
eastern Mass.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Outlook /Friday through Monday/...

Friday through Friday Night: High confidence. VFR.

Saturday: Period of MVFR/IFR conditions possible in snow, mainly
toward south coast. Increasing North wind late.

Saturday Night: MVFR/IFR conditions possible in snow in the
evening. Becoming VFR late. Windy with gusts to around 30 kt
possible.

Sunday: VFR. Breezy.

Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Thursday Night/...

A weak cold front moves through during tonight, with increasing
northwest winds behind it. This will bring increasing winds
tonight with gusts of 30 knots or a little higher.

High pressure remains well west of New England much of this
period, maintaining the northwest winds. Small Craft Advisory
headlines are likely through Thursday evening due to gusty winds
and resulting rough seas, particularly across the eastern
coastal waters.

The cold northwest winds will generate ocean effect snow
showers, especially east of Massachusetts, through Thursday
night.

Besides the winds and corresponding rough seas, freezing spray
will also be a concern, particularly for the eastern coastal
waters. Can see a scenario for areas of heavy freezing spray
tonight, but only have moderate confidence in the spatial
extent. For now, we will continue the Freezing Spray Advisories
into Thursday evening. Later forecast shifts can reevaluate if
Heavy Freezing Spray Warnings will be needed.

Outlook /Friday through Monday/...

Confidence...Moderate.

Friday through Sunday: Confidence moderate. Light winds
anticipated Friday into Saturday morning. Increasing north or
northwest winds Saturday afternoon and night. Gale force gusts
possible Saturday night into Sunday morning. There is a risk of
areas of heavy freezing spray Saturday night into Sunday
morning. Occasional periods of freezing spray possible into
early next week.
