Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...
Through Tonight.

A cold front is approaching northwest Central Alabama this
afternoon, and over the last 45 minutes have watched a broken
line of storms develop from near Iuka, MS southwestward to near
Jackson, MS where a line of storms has been pushing eastward for
several hours. This activity will continue to push across Central
Alabama tonight. Severe storms are not expected, but heavy
rainfall will be possible with any activity as PW values increase
to 1.60 inches or greater ahead of the front. Not all locations
will receive rainfall tonight, but will need to watch localized
areas for flooding given the saturated ground conditions.

This front will push south of the area tomorrow morning, stall,
and quickly advance back northward ahead of an approaching
shortwave Monday afternoon. Rain will spread back into the area
from the southwest Monday afternoon. The previous discussion
remains valid, as there is a large amount uncertainty regarding
the track of the shortwave and associated surface low. Global
models present a more northern solution than the higher res, near
term models, which have performed better with the recent active
pattern. Forecast PoPs and QPFs lean toward the higher res
guidance.

A Flash Flood Watch (FFA) has been issued for the southern tier
of counties in Central Alabama, generally along and south of the
US Highway 80/I-85 corridor. Sunday night, 8+ inches of rain fell
in locations around Montgomery. Over the next two days, an
additional 2 to 4 inches is possible across the south. If models
begin to trend northward with heavier rainfall, additional
counties to the north of the current watch area might need to be
added to the FFA.

.LONG TERM...
Monday through Saturday.

A fast moving, possibly convectively enhanced shortwave will move
through the Gulf Coast region through the base of an large and
anomalously deep trough amplifying over the central and eastern US
Monday and Tuesday. This may be accompanied by a surface low and
LLJ. Rain chances will begin to increase early Monday night as
isentropic lift develops ahead of this system, followed by a
potential MCS early Tuesday morning. There's still alot of
uncertainty regarding the timing and strength of this system. If
it tracks far enough inland, a threat for damaging winds and even
brief tornadoes could develop across parts of southern Central
Alabama south of the warm front. On the other hand, a track along
the coast would minimize surface-based instability further inland,
a scenario that often occurs. There's still too much uncertainty
due to the small size of the wave and mesoscale details to mention
anything in the HWO for severe but will mention the possibility of
flooding with the amount of rainfall that was received on Saturday.

Wednesday a more potent shortwave will round the base of the
anomalous trough and a cold front will move into the area. 0-6 km
bulk shear, upper- level forcing, and cooling aloft will all be
impressive for late May with this system. However, moisture
return will be very questionable behind Tuesday's system due to
low-level winds turning more northwesterly Tuesday night without
much of a southerly LLJ by Wednesday, so instability and
associated severe threat will be uncertain with dewpoints only in
the low 60s. The upper level forcing and front will be enough to
trigger a good chance of showers and embedded storms, also aided
by a -18C cold pool at 500 mb. Dry and refreshingly cooler
conditions will move in for Thursday. Although, we will moderate
back into the mid 80s by Saturday.

.AVIATION...
18Z TAF Discussion.

Low strato-cu and high clouds currently affect terminals across the
area. Rainfall from Saturday night has kept the area stable and
mostly rain free today. An isolated shower and thunderstorm might
develop this afternoon, but chances at any terminal are too low to
mention.  Winds will remain out of the southwest at 7-9kts.

Ahead of an approaching cold front tonight, MVFR clouds and fog are
possible, mainly at ASN, ANB, MGM, and TOI. Scattered showers and
storms are also expected along the front, and have included a period
of VCTS at all terminals. Winds will shift to the northwest and then
northeast by early Monday morning. MVFR cigs are expected to linger
behind the cold front through at least mid morning.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Isolated to scattered showers and storms are expected overnight as a
cold front moves through the area. Most of the area is expected to
be dry. This front will stall and several rounds of heavy rain and
storms are expected beginning Monday afternoon and continuing
through mid week. An another 3-4 inches of rainfall is possible
across southern portions of Central Alabama by Wednesday. Critical
fire weather conditions are not expected.

Locally heavy rainfall will be possible with a system moving along

Alabama.

Minor river flooding may continue into Monday afternoon along the
