...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS CANCELLED...

The Winter Weather Advisory has been cancelled for the Greater 
Capital District, Mohawk Valley, eastern Catskills, Helderbergs, 
mid Hudson Valley, Taconics, southern Berkshires, and Litchfield 
County. Scattered snow showers are expected this afternoon with 
little additional accumulation. Areas of blowing and drifting snow
are possible.

.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system and its associated cold front will
move east of the region tonight with the rain and wintry mix
transitioning to snow showers and flurries before ending tonight.
High pressure will briefly build in on Sunday with seasonably cold
and dry weather. Clouds increase quickly late in the day, as another
storm system will bring a moderate to heavy snowfall to the region
for Christmas followed by blustery conditions and lake effect snow
Christmas night into Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 945 PM EST...Steady precipitation has ended across the
area, as GOES-East water vapor imagery shows a short wave trough
now moving into southern New England. At the surface, a cold
front continues to advance eastward across the Hudson Valley,
with winds shifting to the W-NW behind the front. This boundary
will continue to move eastward into western New England over the
next few hours.

The snow levels drop quickly with a transition to
isolated/scattered snow showers in favored upslope areas as and
a west to northwest breeze will increase tonight with low
pressure quickly moving northeast towards the Canadian Maritimes
tonight. We are not expecting much accumulation with the
snowfall from the Hudson River Valley eastward, as strong
subsidence and some shallow mixing to 500-1000 kft AGL based on
the BUFKIT NAM/GFS sounding profiles occurs in the wake of the
cyclone and frontal boundary Coatings to a few tenth of an inch
of snow will be possible over the Taconics and westerly upslope
regions of the western New England higher terrain, before drier
air filters in. Temps will drop below freezing once again
causing some black ice formation on untreated surfaces.
Overall, lows are projected to be in the upper teens to lower
20s over the mountains, and mid to upper 20s in the valleys and
over the hills with breezy west to northwest winds of 10 to 20
mph.

By daybreak Christmas Eve, high pressure rapidly builds eastward
from the Great Lakes Region.  The mid and upper level flow will be
southwesterly, as another short-wave will be diving into the Upper
MS River Valley and Midwest during the day.  Meanwhile, a strong
baroclinic zone remains just off the East Coast.  These two
disturbances will interact Christmas Eve night bringing some snow to
the region. Sunday will be mainly dry with just a few lake effect
snow showers or flurries in the morning in the west to northwest
flow over the Mohawk Valley, northern Catskills, and Schoharie
Valley, as the subsidence inversion lowers.  Mid and high clouds
will rapidly increase based on the RH profiles.  Clouds will
continue to thicken and lower towards nightfall.  Highs on Christmas
Eve will be seasonable with mid 20s to lower 30s from the Capital
Region, northern Berkshires, and eastern Catskills north and west,
and mid and upper 30s to the south and east.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Widespread moderate to heavy snowfall Christmas Eve night into
Christmas Day.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for late Sunday evening
into Monday afternoon for the western and southern Adirondacks,
Lake George Saratoga, southern Vermont and the northern
Berkshires. A winter weather advisory will likely be needed for
the rest of the forecast area for a moderate snowfall.

Vigorous short wave rotating about base on large upper low over
Hudson's Bay will become negatively tilted as it reaches the
Northeast with favorable jet dynamics in play. A double barrels
low structure is expected to initially develop Sunday into
Sunday night. Late Sunday night into Monday morning the inland
low will weaken and the coastal low will become dominate and
start to rapidly deepen. It will track northeastward along the
New England as it continues to intensify Monday reaching the
Canadian Maritimes by the evening. Snow is expected to quickly
overspread the area late Sunday evening with a widespread steady
snow by around midnight. The bulk of the accumulations will
occur by sunrise Christmas Day. Total snow accumulation through
Monday morning of 6 to 8 inches are expected across the watch
area: western and southern Adirondacks, Lake George Saratoga,
southern Vermont and the northern Berkshires. A moderate
snowfall of 4 to 6 inches is expected across the rest of the
forecast area with the exception of 2 to 4 inches across the
southeast most portion of the forecast into the southern
Dutchess and Litchfield counties where some warmer air works in
aloft resulting in a denser snow.

The pressure gradient across the region will become tight and
with strong cold air advection brisk and gusty westerly winds
will develop by late morning and continue through the afternoon.
Wind gusts into the 40s are expected possibly reaching 50 mph.
A wind advisory may be needed for portions of the area. Wind
weakens in the evening.

Lake effect snows quickly develop Monday afternoon and continue
through Tuesday night with moderate to heavy snowfall expected.
Will eventually need headlines for the lake effect. Focus will
be across the western and southern Adirondacks. In addition
upslope snows will occur Monday afternoon into the evening with
light accumulations expected across southern Vermont, the Taconics
and Berkshires.

Turning much colder Monday night with temperatures dropping down
into the single digits and teens. Recovery on Tuesday will not
be much with highs only in the single digits in the western
Adirondacks up into the mid 20s across the mid Hudson Valley
and northwestern Connecticut. Colder Tuesday night with lows
ranging from 10 below zero to 10 above.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The long term portion of the forecast will be dominated by a very
cold arctic airmass in place with potential for dangerously cold
wind chills. Chances for snow will also increase by next weekend.

THe period starts out on Wednesday with an arctic airmass already
firmly established across the region, with a W-NW flow regime. This
will result in the continued potential for lake effect snow showers
downwind of Lake Ontario affecting the southwest Adirondacks and
western Mohawk Valley based on the expected flow trajectory. Outside
of lake effect it will be dry and frigid with high temps mainly in
the single digits and teens, which will be 15-20 degrees below
normal.

Lake effect snow activity should then diminish by Wednesday night,
as a strong ridge of high pressure is forecast build southeastward
along the Ontario/Quebec border and into upstate New York. This will
result in even colder temperatures, as the GEFS is forecasting 850
mb temperature anomalies of -2 to -3 STDEV. Many locations expected
to drop below zero, with minus teens in the Adirondacks. Wind Chill
Advisories may eventually be needed depending on the wind speeds.

Cold and dry conditions will persist Thursday through Friday, as the
ridge of high pressure slowly drifts eastward across the region.
Continued frigid temperatures will persist, with additional Wind
Chill Advisories possible mainly during the overnight and morning
hours.

The next chance of snow arrives Friday night into Saturday, as
models are showing the potential for a complex storm system with a
primary cyclone approaching from the Great Lakes with secondary
cyclogenesis off the east coast. While the coastal storm may be too
far east for significant snowfall, the primary low could still bring
some accumulating snow. So will mention chance of snow either way.
Will continue monitor this potential snow event, as it is still
about a week away.

.AVIATION /03Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A cold front will continue to push eastward across the region
this evening. A few rain/snow showers will be possible until
around 02Z, before moving off to the east. Initially, conditions
are MVFR/IFR ahead of the front. However, once drier air starts
to work in later this evening and overnight, conditions will
improve to VFR.

Mid level clouds should scour out towards Sunday morning, as
high pressure builds in. However, high level clouds will already
be increasing ahead of a low pressure system approaching from
the south. This system will bring a widespread snowfall to the
region Sunday night into Christmas Day.

Winds will shift to the northwest behind the cold front and
increase to around 5-10 kt. Winds will become north-northwest by
Sunday morning around 5 kt.
