Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albany NY 1049 AM EDT Fri Apr 7 2017 .SYNOPSIS... Conditions will be cool and damp with some more rain and some wet snow as the storm system moves gradually moves northeastward today and tonight. Rain and snow amounts will be light. This system will finally begin to lose its grip on the local area Saturday night as high pressure builds in. Temperatures will be below normal through Saturday, with seasonal readings Sunday, and above normal temperatures early next week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... As of 1045 AM EDT, rain showers in valleys, and snow/rain showers across higher elevations are fairly widespread across the region, as the main upper level trough remains situated across the area, with an embedded upper level impulse passing through. Expect clouds to remain widespread through this afternoon. Showers will vary in areal coverage, with the possibility of decreasing coverage in valley areas later this afternoon as the embedded upper level impulse passes by. Higher terrain should have more frequent showers of rain and snow, with mainly snow above 1500 FT. Additional snow accumulations through this afternoon could reach 1-2 inches across highest elevations of the western Adirondacks, and also across some of the highest elevations of southern VT, with a coating to around an inch for higher terrain in the Berkshires, Taconics, and eastern Catskills. Scattered coatings could also occur across portions adjacent to the western Mohawk Valley for elevations above 500 feet. There could be some wet snowflakes/graupel occasionally mixing in with the rain showers even in valley areas through this afternoon. Temperatures will fluctuate through this afternoon, mainly between the upper 30s to mid 40s in valleys, and lower/mid 30s across higher elevations. Temps will be coolest during showers. && .SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... Chances for showers decrease as the night progress and the low moves farther off to our northeast and weakens further. Seasonally cold lows expected however northwesterly winds will remain rather brisk and gusty. A return to dry weather Saturday with increasing sunshine as ridging begins to build in. Below normal temperatures expected for another day along with brisk and gusty winds; 15 to 20 mph with gusts into the 30s as the region is squeezed between the departing low and the advancing high. The surface ridge will slide across the region shifting off the east coast Sunday while aloft the ridge crests over the region. Temperatures will moderate as a return flow sets up about the surface high and the upper ridge builds in. Looking at highs around 10 degrees above normal along with light winds and sunshine; much nicer day than Saturday. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Mainly quiet and milder weather is expected through the majority of the long term period. Upper level ridge axis will be situated over the Northeast on Monday, with surface high pressure located just south of the region off the mid-Atlantic coast. With broad west to southwest flow at all levels, much milder air will be workings its way into the area. With 850 hpa temps surging up to around 10 degrees C and mixing expected to at least that level, max temps look to reach the low to mid 70s for most valley areas. Higher terrain areas should reach the mid 60s to low 70s. There should be a partly to mostly cloudy sky, with the least amount of clouds across southeastern parts of the area. Any clouds should be fairly high cirrus clouds. The upper level ridge will start to shift offshore on Tuesday as a shortwave approaches from the Great Lakes. However, we should have one more very mild day on Tuesday, as strong southwest flow aloft allows for some even warmer temps, which will be aided by downsloping flow. Most areas should reach well into the 70s on Tuesday with a partly to mostly cloudy sky, as mixing reaches up to about 800 hpa. Although some showers may reach into far northern and western areas by late in the day, most locations look to stay dry. A large upper level storm is situated over the region, with an area of strong low pressure located just northwest of the area over the Tug Hill Plateau. The cold front will be crossing through the area with some rain showers for Tuesday night or Wednesday, depending on its exact timing. If the passage occurs during the day, there could be some thunder as well, although not enough confidence in this to include in the forecast at this time. Even behind the front, there could be a lingering shower across northern areas thanks to the passing upper level trough, as cooler air aloft moves into the region. Mild lows will be in the mid 40s to low 50s with the clouds and possible showers on Tuesday night and highs on Wednesday are generally in the mid 50s to mid 60s, although this will ultimately depend on the exact timing of the frontal boundary. More quiet weather looks to return behind the front. It should be dry for Wednesday night into Thursday with temperatures at or slightly above seasonal levels. The next chance for rain will be with another frontal passage either late Thursday night or on Friday. && .AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... A large upper level storm is situated over the region, with an area of strong low pressure located just northwest of the area over the Tug Hill Plateau and western Adirondacks. Some showers associated with this storm are still impacting the region, although the bulk of them this morning are north and west of the TAF sites. During this morning, ceilings will mainly be right around high end MVFR or low end VFR, with ceiling heights 2-4 kft. Southerly winds will generally be right around 10 kts. This additional rainfall will be light and hydrologically insignificant so have cancelled the flood watch. Dry weather returns Saturday and will continue into early next week along with temperatures moderating to above normal. River levels will slowly recede, however the warmer temperatures will result in runoff from snow melt. As of 5 am the following river points are exceeding flood stage: Delta Dam (Mohawk River), Troy (Hudson River) and Hope (Sacandaga River). Riverbank (Schroon River) is forecast to continue to gradually rise reaching flood stage Saturday morning.
