Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
An active weather pattern will begin today for the west coast with
relatively quiet conditions persisting for the Interior and North
Slope for the next several days. The models are in decent
agreement out through the weekend; however, the temperature
guidance has struggled some with the temperatures in the Interior
as of late.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a 501 dam low centered over the northwestern
Brooks Range will be pushed north today by a northward moving
ridge. This ridge will bring southerly flow to most of northern
Alaska through the middle of the upcoming week. A broad upper low
will move into the southern Bering Sea today and will persist into
the middle of the upcoming week. Several shortwaves will move
around this low bringing active weather to the west coast.

Central and Eastern Interior: Low stratus persists in areas to
the west of Fairbanks this morning while areas from Fairbanks
east are mainly clear resulting in a wide range of temperatures
across the Interior. Cloud cover will move across much of the
Interior today from the south as the ridge advances northward.
This will result in warming temperatures today. Low temperatures
in the eastern Interior look to be warmer tonight as compared to
the past few nights due to increased cloud cover. Warmer temperatures
moving in aloft will keep a strong inversion in place over the
Middle Tanana Valley. Little precipitation is expected for the
Interior for the next few days thanks in part to the southerly
flow aloft. Gusty southerly winds are expected to develop in
Alaska Range passes this evening. Current thinking is that winds
will be sub-advisory; however, it will be close (wind gusts to 45
mph are expected). Winds associated with the Tanana Valley Jet
developed overnight and look to strengthen today. There will also
be some gusty drainage winds in the Yukon Valley near the Canadian
Border at times today.

North Slope and Brooks Range: A surface low north of Barrow will
move off to the north today. The low will a few flurries to
coastal areas today; however, this will end as the low moves north.
Generally quiet weather is expected for the next few days.

West Coast and Western Interior: A front associated with a low
over the central Aleutians will bring snowfall to areas south of
the Bering Strait this afternoon into tomorrow. 1 to 4 inches of
snow accumulation is expected with this system with the heaviest
amounts in the Yukon Delta. Winds over the Bering Sea (and
adjacent coastal areas) will really ramp up this eventing.
Blizzard conditions are expected for St. Lawrence Island beginning
tonight and continuing through early Monday. With the morning
package I upgraded the Winter Storm Watch for zone 213 to a
Blizzard Warning. In addition to the inherited Winter Weather
Advisory for zone 214, I added Winter Weather Advisories for
zones 211 and 212. The northeasterly winds associated with this
system will likely bring some elevated surf to St. Lawrence Island
on Sunday. Winds will die down Sunday evening along the west
coast and early Monday morning on St. Lawrence Island. Another
system will move northward across the west coast Tuesday;
however, at this point the models differ on the exact details of
this.
