Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 253 PM AKDT Sat Oct 28 2017 .DISCUSSION... Models in agreement with a 516 dam low southeast of Wrangel Island and a ridge over eastern Alaska and NW Canada. A 530 dam low in Bristol bay will get pushed to the south by a 573 dam developing ridge over the Seward Penn. This high will quiet the weather for much of the state through Thursday. Leaning more towards a blended model solution for this forecast package. Surface...A 999 mb low will form over the Chukchi Sea on Saturday and track northeast near Barrow as a 1012 mb low Sunday morning. A 1041 mb high builds over the Brooks range by Wednesday morning. A 994 mb low will enter Bristol bay by 18Z Monday and track to the east and weaken by Tuesday. Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Not going to see much change over the next 24 hours. Snow, fog, low ceilings, poor visibility, and temperatures in the 20s. northeast to east winds for most areas at 10 to 20 mph. West Coast and Western Interior...A mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain. Heaviest precipitation will again be north of Norton Sound and Huslia with 4 to 7 more inches of snow in the Upper Kobuk and Noatak Basins. Models have changed a bit and snowfall Sunday may not be as heavy as previously expected. Central and Eastern Interior...Chinook flow developing across the Alaska Range today which will limit precipitation from Fairbanks southeast. Gusts in the Alaska Range to 60 mph today. Winds for the remainder of the area Northeast at 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures in the lower 30s. Another shot of precip is possible for the Western Interior and Central Interior Monday morning into Tuesday. A mix of rain and snow is possible. Depending how much of the precip falls as rain will limit snow accumulations at this point. Will continue to monitor over the weekend.
