The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued a High Wind
Warning, which is in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 6 AM AKDT
Thursday. The High Wind Watch is no longer in effect. 

* LOCATION...Saint Lawrence Island.

* WINDS...East winds gusting 50 to 60 mph.

* TIMING...Winds will increase today with the strongest winds from
  4 pm through midnight tonight. Winds will decrease early
  Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Strong winds will make travel difficult. Loose 
  objects will be blown around.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Aloft...
The long wave pattern consisting of a ridge over Eastern Alaska
and NW Canada and a trough over the Sea of Okhotsk and western
Bering Sea will begin to progress east Wed with the trough moving
over mainland Alaska Thu. This pattern will allow a strong storm
to develop over the central Bering Sea tonight and Wed that will
move into the YK Delta Thu. This storm will be addressed with
surface conditions below.

Conditions will remain much warmer than normal over most of
Northern Alaska under the ridge through Wed, and then cool
dramatically into the weekend as the trough moves east.

Surface...
A low north of Wrangel Island will drift north. A weather front
extending east from this low to Point Lay and Barter Island will
move north of the Arctic Coast Tue afternoon. There are areas of
fog along this trough with dense fog over zone 203 this morning.
East winds of 15-25 kt just north of this front will decrease this
afternoon as the front moves north.

A 1002 mb low over Norton Sound will move to be over the eastern
Chukchi Sea Wed afternoon. This is causing rain over much of the
West Coast and Western Interior of Alaska today that will continue
into Wed.

A low pressure trough over the Tanana Valley will weaken this
morning. Southerly gap flow winds to through Alaska Range passes
will decrease this morning as well.

A frontal wave developing in the Gulf of Alaska today will move
to near Fairbanks tonight, to near Eagle by 4pm Wed, to near
Demarcation Point by 4am Thu, and then north of the Arctic Coast
by 4pm Thu. Expect a chance of rain with this feature.

A very strong low will develop over the western Bering Sea Tue
night, moving to the central Bering as a 960 mb low by 4pm Wed,
and to near Cape Romazof as a 965 mb low by Thu 10 am then
continuing inland. Expect southeast gales and rain ahead of this
low to move over the northern Bering Sea Wed including zones 213
and 214, and spread to the Norton Sound Coast Wed night. Since
these winds are mainly offshore, sea levels will be at or below
normal most areas. Exception will be at Scammon Bay where winds
will turn south on Wed night just ahead of the low and bring sea
levels of 2-3 feet above normal tides. This is still well within
normal range at Scammon Bay so not a concern at this time.

North winds 20-30 kt will develop over the Northern Bering Sea
following the low Thu.

Ahead of this low over the Alaska Range, strong south winds
are expected to develop through Alaska range passes again late
Wednesday night and continue through Thu.

.DISCUSSION...
Models initialize well and showing similar solutions through Thu.
The timing and location of the strong low developing tonight in
the Bering Sea is now much more similar among deterministic
models through its landfall on Thu. Since all solutions are
taking the low onshore at or south of Cape Romanzof, the strong
west winds and high surge values should remain well south of Cape
Ramonzof.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...At Scammon Bay winds
will turn south on Wed night and bring sea levels of 2-3 feet
above normal tides. This is still well within normal range at
Scammon Bay so not a concern at this time. Otherwise no concerns
at this time.
