Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

Models...There continues to be good agreement and run to run
continuity in the short term. Midrange and extended periods have a
reasonable handle on the ridging, but there are some differences
in the handling of shortwaves moving around the high, especially
late in the extended periods. Models initialized well against the
31/15Z surface analysis.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Long wave trough lies from Wainwright to
Ruby to 539 dam low over western Shelikof Strait this afternoon.
Northern half will sheer off and continue to move east to be east
of the state by Wednesday morning. Southern half will be pinched
between 558 dam high over the southeastern Gulf of Alaska, and the
building ridge over the eastern Bering Sea and Aleutians and will
be squeezed south. A second shortwave associated with a 486 dam
low over the Siberian arctic will move over the Chukchi Sea to
tonight and lie along 150W north of the Yukon River by Wednesday
morning, moving east of the state late in the afternoon. A 565 dam
closed high will cutoff from the ridge and move north over the
lower Yukon Delta late Wednesday, and will cover most of mainland
Alaska by Thursday afternoon as the center moves over Norton Sound
at 570 dam. The ridge will persist into the weekend as it weakens
to 566 dam. A 540 dam low will develop over the Bering Strait
Saturday night. At 850 hpa...Temperatures will cool slightly
tonight then warm through the weekend as they rise to around zero
celsius by Saturday.

Surface...Ridging will persist over the eastern interior and
yukon Territory. A 998 mb low near Wrangel Island will move north
along 170W into the high arctic. A weather front will move east
over the arctic coast, Brooks Range, and Central and Eastern
Interior this evening into Canada. A second cold front will move
over the northwest coast this evening moving east northeast over
the arctic coast and Brooks Range into Canada by Wednesday
morning. A 1020 mb low over Shelikof Strait will slide south and
weaken. Ridge over the eastern interior will build west with a
1049 mb center developing over the upper Kobuk and central Brooks
Range by Wednesday afternoon, and a 1046 mb center over the middle
Yukon Valley around Ruby. The ridge will cover the state by mid
day Thursday with a 1052 mb center over the middle Koyukuk Valley
Friday morning.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Windy, light snow, blowing snow,
and some fog next 24 hours or so. Blizzard conditions will develop
over the eastern arctic coast around Barter Island so have issued
a Blizzard Warning for Wednesday morning into Thursday morning.
Winter Weather Advisories continue for the Brooks Range and the
coast from Barrow west. Winds primarily south to southwest 15 to
30 mph gusting to around 40 mph in the areas with Advisories and
near 60 mph around Barter Island. Not much change in temperatures
next 24 hours, then a slight warm up as high pressure builds over
the interior and pulls warm air north. Near Blizzard conditions
around Cape Lisburne will diminish this evening, but strong winds
developing over the area for Wednesday and Thursday.

West Coast and Western Interior...The active weather of the past
couple days is heading out this evening and conditions will
improve through the evening. High pressure building over the
interior and pushing west over the eastern Bering Sea will bring
mainly clear skies and mild temperatures for early February with
light offshore winds. The exception will be out on St lawrence
Island where they will see a mix of clouds, and southeast winds
picking up to 15 to 30 mph.

Central and Eastern Interior...A few flurries possible around the
interior this evening as the tail of a decaying weather front
moves east across the area, otherwise becoming mostly clear by
morning and remaining that way through the weekend. Temperatures a
few degrees cooler tonight, then a few more degrees cooler
Thursday night before a they warm up slowly through the weekend.
Winds generally light and variable through the weekend. The
exception may be some gusty winds to 25 mph in the White Mountains
and higher elevations of the upper Yukon Flats Wednesday night
into Thursday morning.
