Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...There is little to recommend your present state
of affairs if warmer air is expected to spread in from the high
arctic, but that is the case this morning, at least for our
western arctic coast, for coastal areas of northwest Alaska, and
for the Bering Strait area and Saint Lawrence Island. A warm
front over the East Siberian Sea (west and northwest of Wrangel
Island) is expected to move southeast over the area tonight and
Monday, and some flurries (at least) are likely along with the
moderating temperatures. This particular warm front will have
little impact on the remainder of northern Alaska, but only
because a stronger system will be bringing in warmer air from an
area from which we more commonly receive it, the Gulf of Alaska.

The old low aloft, presently over northwest Alaska, will move
south to center over the eastern Seward Peninsula around noon,
then move southwest to be near Saint Paul Island Monday afternoon.
It will turn southeast thereafter. Near Cold Bay Tuesday morning,
it will entrain a strong short wave coming up from the south. The
merging systems will dumbbell around each other for the next
couple of days, and probably be somewhere between King Salmon and
Kodiak Thursday morning. A series of weaker short waves will move
north out of the Gulf of Alaska as the situation described above
develops. The first of these will reach the gulf coast this
evening, and move over interior Alaska on Monday. Southerly flow
aloft (moderate to strong) will develop over northern Alaska south
of the Brooks Range by Monday, with warmer temperatures in
consequence. Little warming is expected north of the Brooks Range
anytime soon though, as cyclonic circulation aloft will persist
over that area, and most of the warmer air will be shunted to the
east.

The surface low that was moving northeast over the Gulf of Alaska
on Saturday has lifted out over Canada's Yukon. Precipitation over
southeastern portions of zones 224 and 226 that was associated
with this feature has ended, or nearly so. The 988 mb surface low
centered north of Barrow will fill this morning, as its support
aloft has moved south. The weak wide scale cyclonic circulation
aloft over our portion of the arctic will persist though, as
mentioned above.
