.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Water vapor satellite imagery shows an "anchoring" upper low
centered over Eastern Siberia with a southern stream shortwave
trough forming the base of the overall longwave trough. This
shortwave is traversing the Bering Sea and is enhancing a large,
broad area of low level warm air advection, with the leading edge
pushing into coastal Southwest Alaska. Shortwave ridging is
moving east across Alaska ahead of the trough, with satellite
imagery showing an extensive area of cirrus associated with the
broad scale lifting in response the warm air advection aloft. With
pressure building along the North Gulf Coast and the Bering low
moving northeast, this is inducing a cross-barrier gradient along
the Chugach and Kenai Mountains. This gradient is inducing a
stronger Turnagain Arm wind which is now bending north into parts
of Southwest Anchorage. Across southwest Alaska, south-southeast
winds as high as 30-45 MPH are being observed.

With a split in the upper jet stream, Southwest Alaska remains
under an unfavorable upper level environment for forcing for
ascent, so thus far, rain has been rather sporadic and light.
Rain is now finally trying to move east across the Alaska Range
into Southcentral, but strong low level southeast winds are
inhibiting rainfall potential at this time.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The dynamical weather models are in excellent agreement with the
general pattern heading through the weekend. The largest
discrepancies early on revolve around how much precipitation
falls across typical downslope areas for the next day. Overall,
higher resolution models were favored which depict more efficient
downslope shadowing along with more realistic local terrain gap
winds.

Thereafter, while all depicting a rather intense early season
storm force low in the Bering Sea, the spread in the guidance
grows quickly with the low track on Friday. The devil is in the
details, with the ECMWF depicting a southern low track with the
disparate 12z GFS depicting a far north track. The core of
strongest winds varies by hundreds of miles, so this forecast will
take a continuity approach favoring the ECMWF which enhances
winds to storm force over the central and southern Bering Sea.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions will persist through Wed afternoon,
although CIGS will drop to near 5000 feet at times this evening.
Gusty southeast winds will continue tonight and then gradually
weaken Wednesday morning, although still remaining gusty during
the afternoon around 20-25 knots.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The next weather system is moving into Southcentral Alaska this
afternoon bringing clouds back into the area with some areas of
rain. While the Copper River Basin remains clear, it will become
cloudy overnight as this system tracks eastward.
The pressure gradient is rapidly tightening over the area which is
bringing in some gusty winds to the typical areas such as Turnagain
Arm and along the Copper River.

The biggest forecast question for tonight through the next two
days is: how much rain will make it across the leeward side of the
mountains? There is southwest flow from the boundary layer
through 250 mb moving into Southcentral Alaska. That typically
means rain, but the strong cross-barrier winds along the Kenai,
Chugach, and Talkeetna Mountains will significantly reduce
precipitation as well as keep in some locally gusty southeast
winds.

At this time there best solution appears to bring in some rain to
Anchorage, the western Kenai Peninsula and the Matanuska Valley,
but keep it generally very light. In the Susitna valley there
should be a little more rainfall with the southwest flow and less
downsloping.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Rainy conditions and gusty onshore flow will persist through
Wednesday over much of the southwest Mainland, as the front and
associated low track further east tonight into Wednesday
afternoon. Conditions will become more showery and slowly
diminish Wednesday evening through Thursday evening as forcing
weakens over the area. The gusty south to south west winds will
follow suit and gradually diminish into Thursday evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
Rainy conditions and gusty winds over the Eastern Bering and
Alaska Peninsula will become more showery with diminishing winds
overnight tonight and into Wednesday morning. A weak area of high
pressure at the surface will traverse the Bering/Aleutians from
west to east Wednesday, prior to the next system of interest
moving into the central Aleutians early Thursday morning. This
system will bring rainy conditions and some stronger gale-force
winds back to the central and eastern Bering/Aleutians.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
The long term pattern will continue to be active with several
systems moving through the region by the middle of next week. On
Friday, a departing weak surface trough will lead to lingering
rain along the North Gulf Coast. This system will be kicked out of
the area as a strong cyclone forms in the Central Bering Sea,
which will be the main focus of the period. Models are in decent
agreement regarding the early track of the storm, with the low
center deepening to about 970 mb as it moves NE towards the
Pribilofs. Models begin to diverge by Friday night, with the
EC/NAM being more progressive taking the center directly over the
Pribilofs then SE across the AKPEN into the Gulf. The GFS takes
the low just north of the Pribilofs then becomes quasi-stationary
just offshore of the Seward Peninsula, which seems to be the
outlier among the models. Regardless of the exact position, a
very tight pressure gradient combined with cold air advection on
the backside of the low will lead to storm force winds across the
Central and Southern Bering, including the Pribilof Islands, on
Friday and Saturday. The low looks to move into the Gulf by Sunday
bringing good chances of strong winds and heavy rain to coastal
communities over the weekend. A some what quieter pattern looks to
develop early next week as a weaker storm brushes the Aleutians
and high pressure tries to build into the Western Bering by
Tuesday.
