west/northern Gulf by this afternoon. This front moves westward

southeast of Yakutat Tue evening moves 80 nm east of Kodiak Island 
at 992 mb Wed morning before moving 80 nm southeast of the Chirikof

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A persistent elongated ridge over mainland Alaska and a broad
North Pacific low centered near 50N have formed a Rex block over
the region this morning. This is maintaining a dry offshore flow
pattern across most of the southern mainland. An easterly wave
rotating around the northern periphery of the low is starting to
spread some clouds and rain showers into the northeastern portion
of Prince William Sound, however the rest of the region remains in
a quiet and dry pattern beneath the dominant upper level ridge.
Meanwhile, another upper level trough is in place over the western
Bering, with a surface low near Kiska bringing rain to the
Western Aleutians. The rest of the Bering remains in a very benign
cloudy pattern within a col region between the dominant large
scale features.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Guidance remains in generally good agreement through the short
term as models have converged on a solution for the next low
tracking along the Aleutian chain. The GFS/NAM have come more in
line with the EC/GEM over the past 24 hours in slowing the
progression of the low and keeping it south of the chain as it is
eventually shunted southeastward into the Pacific once it
encounters the mainland ridge. Given the better agreement, mainly
utilized Hi-Res NAM guidance to better capture local effects for
the morning forecast package.

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist through the TAF
period.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Even with the additional cloud coverage today, afternoon
temperatures are running slightly above normal. Several
thunderstorms have popped up on radar just north of Palmer and
isolated convection will continue this evening. The upper level
ridge axis will remain over the interior with a thermal trough
developing at the surface. Meanwhile the remnants of a low
pressure system move into SE Alaska. Easterly waves from the
aforementioned low will trek over portions of southcentral
bringing the threat of showers and thunderstorms both Saturday and
Sunday afternoon.

.FIRE WEATHER SOUTH CENTRAL ALASKA...

This afternoon lightning was detected over the Bristol Bay region
near King Salmon and further inland north of Port Alsworth and
north of Palmer. Additional isolated thunderstorms are possible
through the Alaska Range this forecast period in the afternoon.
Several factors will contribute to the thunderstorm potential.
There is a decaying low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska
that is kicking energy out of it including several easterly waves
which are inherently unstable. The waves themselves don't look too
impressive but with diurnal heating there is a definite
possibility for isolated thunderstorms. This low will be the
primary moisture source for any convection that develops.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

High pressure continues to dominate most of Southwest Alaska
through the weekend with mostly sunny skies and temperatures
warming well into the 70s, with some locations in the Upper
Kuskokwim valley pushing towards the 80 degree mark. Isolated
showers with a few thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon
as warm surface temperatures will lead to unstable conditions
with steep lapse rates in the lower atmosphere. Satellite and
radar imagery currently shows some showers popping up over the
Kilbuck and Wood River Mountains. Low levels are expected to
remain dry so any precipitation will be light if it reaches the
ground at all. A weak easterly wave will push in during the day on
Sunday bringing increased clouds with showers popping up over the
Eastern Alaska Range in the afternoon. A marine layer currently
located just north of the AKPEN will push E/NE tonight bringing
low stratus inland and up to the Bristol Bay area, keeping coastal
temperatures lower during the day on Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

A low centered over the Western Aleutians will move E/SE Saturday
through Sunday bringing steady rain and increased winds to the
chain. The low center drops South of the Aleutians by Sunday
morning bringing E/SE winds and rain as far East as Chignik before
quickly moving SE into the Northern Pacific. The system will move
quickly so total rainfall amounts should remain less than an inch
for most locations. A ridge of high pressure builds in over the
Western Aleutians after the low departs on Sunday before the next
system moves in by Monday.

.FIRE WEATHER SOUTHWEST ALASKA...

Warm and dry conditions will exist over the Kuskokwim Valley this
weekend and will approach red flag criteria with high temps in the
mid to upper 70's and RH's in the 20's during the day, though
winds should remain less than 15 mph. Isolated thunderstorms will
be possible in the afternoon over the Kuskokwim Mountains and the
Alaska Range. Chances of a wetting rain will be very low with
dewpoint depressions around 30-40 degrees. Light steering flow
aloft will keep any thunderstorm activity nearly stationary and
focused over the higher terrain.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

Beginning the extended forecast period Sunday evening, there will
be a blocking high over the northwest portion of Alaska with an
elongated upper low over the North Pacific. This system will be in
the process of merging with a migratory closed low west of the
Alaska Panhandle. This pattern will feature a broad area of
easterly winds/flow aloft over all of southern Alaska. With a weak
thermal low over the interior, this will favor the warmest
temperatures inland (slightly above normal) with more mild
temperatures along the coast. Most days will be dry, but there
will be threats for afternoon and evening convection, aided by
easterly shortwave troughs, to enhance precipitation locally.
The best instability axis will be along the Alaska Range and
Talkeetna Mountains where isolated thunderstorms will be a threat.

This general pattern will continue most of Monday until the
aforementioned North Pacific low moves into the Gulf of Alaska,
and the associated front moves toward the coast. This pattern will
dominate Tuesday through Thursday with rain along the coast and
showers inland, focused on the mountains. Overall, this pattern
will keep near if not slightly above normal temps inland, but with
additional cloud cover.

A potential warm-up for late week is possible as the Gulf low
moves southeast and weak ridging builds inland. However,
uncertainty exists with the upper level height field pattern as
the GFS is the most bullish building in higher heights aloft
(warmer temps at the surface, too). However, since climatology
tends toward higher heights, the WPC forecast favored this so a
slight warming trend was favored in the WPC blend for the extended
range.
