.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
In western Alaska, the high pressure ridge that was present is
making way for a deepening low pressure system that will push
into the Eastern Bering. The low will continue to deepen as it
propagates into the Central Bering Sea from the North Pacific
today. A strong easterly moving front currently located over the
central and eastern Aleutians/Bering Sea is causing winds to
start increasing and light rain to fall over the area. Looking to
the east, gusty outflow winds continue to slowly diminish along
the areas surrounding the north Gulf coast and Cook Inlet region,
as the low pressure system in the eastern Gulf weakens.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models remain in good agreement with the overall synoptic pattern
through Sunday morning, where they begin to differ with regards to
the strong low tracking through the eastern Bering by Sunday
afternoon. Through Sunday models are in good agreement with a
north Pacific low strengthening as it tracks through the western
and central Aleutians today, producing hurricane force winds
along western periphery of the system, and then tracking into the
eastern Bering come Sunday morning. At this time the EC and
Canadian models are tracking the low over the eastern Bering
across the Alaska Peninsula and into the Gulf on Monday. Whereas
the American models (NAM/GFS) are stalling the parent low over the
Western coast, and producing a triple point low over parts of the
Western gulf on Monday. The preferred solution for this forecast
package was the more southerly solution (EC/Canadian) with the low
crossing over the AKPen and into the Gulf Monday. However, with
the large differences between the two solutions, confidence in the
current forecast track of the low remains moderate at best.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The low over the eastern Gulf will weaken as it tracks westward
into the central Gulf today, resulting in slackening pressure
gradients across Southcentral. At the same time, a trough on the
north side of the low will track westward across the northern
Gulf, which will cause the mean low level flow to shift from
offshore to onshore. Both of these together will lead to
diminishing winds across the region. As winds die down
temperatures will fall. In fact, some areas where wind is
currently blowing will observe high temperatures this morning,
with steady or falling temperatures during the day.
Snow along the trough axis will push westward across Prince
William Sound. The very dry airmass in place and continued
offshore flow at the surface will initially result in evaporation
of falling precipitation. Included just a chance of light snow (or
flurries) for Prince William Sound communities. Easterly flow
will strengthen over the northern Gulf tonight through Sunday out
ahead of an upper trough and surface front moving into the Gulf
from the Bering Sea and Aleutians. Increasing upslope flow in
western Prince William Sound will take advantage of the low level
moisture advected in from the trough and lead to development of
steady snow Sunday through Sunday night. Locally stronger winds
through Portage Valley and eastern Turnagain Arm will lead to
blowing snow and reduced visibilities. Temperatures should quickly
rise to around 30 degrees as winds come up, so do not think a
winter weather advisory for blowing snow will be necessary, though
there may be a brief period of localized near zero visibilities.
Some moisture will advect across the Chugach and Kenai Mountains
Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, but the limiting factor
for precipitation will be dry low level air, so wouldn't expect
more than flurries or very light snow and no accumulation.
Meanwhile, the upper trough and front moving into the Gulf will
bring snow to Kodiak Island Sunday, with warm air advection
leading to a mix with or changeover to rain late Sunday afternoon
through Sunday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
A strong frontal system associated with a powerful storm moving
into the Bering will reach the Southwest Alaska coast late
tonight/early Sunday morning. The primary concern will be strong
winds combined with snow falling along the coast creating areas of
blowing snow. For the Kuskokwim Delta, the front stalls right
along the coast with light snow in the morning and then
persisting offshore flow and strong winds, making blowing snow the
main impact through the day Sunday. In the greater Bristol Bay
area, the front makes it a bit further inland with heavy snow a
concern in addition to blowing snow from Dillingham westward
where south to southeast flow aloft will orographically enhance
precipitation along and near the Ahklun and Wood-Tikchik Mountains.
Strong gap winds along and downwind of the Alaska and Aleutian
Ranges will additionally create areas of blowing snow, but
expecting visibilities in those area to remain higher as easterly
flow should downslope out most of the precipitation associated
with the front.
Model uncertainty increases significantly around Monday with two
scenarios possible...either the remnants of the big upper low
drifting towards the Southwest Alaska coast which would continue
the snowfall threat as troughs rotate onshore or the low tracks
off to the southeast across the Alaska Peninsula leading to more
rapid clearing and drying. Based on the structure of the strong
westerly jet to the south, I tend to think the second scenario is
more likely.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
Confidence continues to increase in widespread storm to hurricane
force sustained winds associated with a powerful 942 mb low
crossing the Aleutians around 180 degrees longitude this
afternoon and moving into the southern Bering to near the
Pribilof Islands through Sunday morning. The central and eastern
Aleutians look to take the biggest hit from this powerful storm
with frequent gusts of 90 to 100 mph likely. In addition to the
very strong winds seas of 40 to 50 ft are likely over a broad

Overall, expect a trend away from windier outflow conditions,
to a warmer, more active pattern with more precipitation.
Getting into next week the pattern looks much different than the
current one. The Bering Sea storm will shift the longwave trough
over that area, bringing the active jet into the eastern Bering,
which will result in a new strong storm system crossing the Alaska
Peninsula on Wednesday. That storm track looks to bring deeper
south/southwesterly flow to much of the mainland for the remainder
of the forecast period. With that particular storm track, also
expect the potential for an Anchorage wind event in the Wednesday
timeframe.
