.SYNOPSIS...
Tropical Storm Hermine will move across the eastern Carolinas
later today and tonight. Although brief tornadoes are possible,
the most widespread threat will come from flooding rains and
tropical storm force winds. Canadian high pressure in the wake of
Hermine will bring cooler and drier weather Saturday afternoon...
and into early next week. High temperatures will return to near 90
or above mid and late next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 800 AM Friday...Tornado Watch has been issued for portions
of our SC and NC forecast areas, consisting of Williamsburg,
Georgetown, Florence, Marion, Horry, Columbus and Brunswick.
Previous forecast discussion...
Hermine made landfall as acategory 1 hurricane across the Florida
panhandle at 140 am. Hermine is expected to move quickly NE
through tonight, moving across northeast South Carolina and
southeast North Carolina as a tropical storm.
A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect. Widespread 4 to 7 inches of
rain is expected with the heaviest of the rain falling through this
eve. Higher amounts will be possible. This amount of rain may
cause flash flooding. Low-lying and poor drainage areas will be
especially susceptible. Urban centers will also be especially
prone to flooding as drainage systems become overwhelmed. Rapid
rises on small streams and creeks may force some to leave their
banks.
There is also a tornado threat along and to the east of where the
center tracks and this will basically include the entire forecast
area E of interstate 95. The risk for a brief tornado will be
highest late morning and through the afternoon.
Tropical storm force winds and wet ground will likely result in
downed trees and perhaps isolated power outages. Wind gusts up to
around 50 mph are expected along and near the coast with 35 to 45
mph wind gusts elsewhere. Where we do not have Tropical Storm
Warnings posted, we have issued Wind Advisories.
Also, given the proximity to the new moon and a strong onshore push,
we may have to contend with minor coastal flooding for the immediate
coast and along portions of the lower Cape Fear River during the eve
high tide. Other impacts will include beach erosion, strong rip
currents and high and very rough surf. A modest storm surge of up
to 2 ft is possible as well.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 330 AM Friday...Tropical Storm Hermine will move north of our
latitude prior to the start of the period taking the last of the
heavy rain and significant winds with it. In the wake of Hermine,
much cooler and drier air is expected to pour southward and across
the FA on northerly winds as Canadian high pressure builds south.
Although the column dries significantly under the influence of
strong subsidence and the strong influx of much drier air, the
models continue to show a mid-level shortwave trough pivoting across
the area coincident with peak heating. Thus, am inclined to continue
a slight chance for showers across most of the FA into Sat
afternoon. No rainfall is expected on Sun and in fact sunshine
should be plentiful that day.
High temps will be in the lower to mid 80s with comfortable humidity
levels. Lows will be in the 60s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 330 AM Friday...Medium range guidance is continuing to show what
amounts to a blocking pattern aloft with high pressure across the
Mississippi Valley and closed low pressure off the northeast coast.
The pattern does show signs of breaking down late in the period. At
the surface it will be high pressure in place but guidance is
pointing to a more northwest flow with surface troughing emanating
from the system to the northeast. This is reflected in numerical
guidance for temperatures which have trended warmer via more
downslope. The official forecast has been incrementally increased as
well.

.AVIATION /12Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 12Z...Needless to say, things will be very fluid today with
varying ceilings and visibilities with anywhere from light rain to
torrential downpours. Have backed off on the winds a bit as
observations near the center of Hermine are only around 35 kts. Very
cold cloud tops around the coast of South Carolina indicate thunder
will be present, even in a tropical environment. The heaviest
activity will move from south to north from 15-22Z. Flooding will be
a given, with over five inches of rain in spots a near certainty. As
the low moves north tonight, winds will shift to the northwest but
remain fairly brisk. Improving conditions from south to north after
05Z.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK...Tropical storm conditions through Saturday
morning. VFR Saturday afternoon through Tuesday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 700 AM Friday...Hermine will create dangerous marine
conditions through tonight. Winds will be increasing from S to N
this afternoon. The strongest winds will exit the region late
tonight, lastly across the Cape Fear waters early Sat morning.
Wind speeds up to 40 to 50 kt are expected. The direction will
veer from SE to SW while the winds are strongest and then become
westerly overnight. A strong offshore wind may result in a blowout
tide with the overnight low tide. Seas will build to 13 to 17 ft
today and this eve and then as Hermine passes, the strong offshore
component will knock seas back to 5 to 10 ft early Sat morning.
SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 330 AM Friday...Dangerous marine conditions will be quickly
coming to an end Sat. The wind direction will be westerly Sat
morning, but veering to the N by/during the afternoon as Hermine
moves up the coast and away from the area. Wind speeds will be
highest in the morning, up to 20 to 30 kt, subsiding to 15 to 20 kt
during the afternoon. As high pressure builds south, the wind
direction will back to N and NW Sun and Sun night. Wind speeds Sat
night will be near 15 kt and then 10 to 15 kt Sun and Sun night.
Seas will continue to subside, reaching 3 to 5 ft by Sat eve and
2 to 3 ft by Sun eve.
LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 330 AM Friday...With inland troughing prevalent through the
period, winds will be mostly southwest across the waters sans a few
hours early when a northwest flow prevails. Speeds will be 10-15
