Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hastings NE 1254 PM CDT SUN SEP 4 2016 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 421 AM CDT Sun Sep 4 2016 We will be between two disturbances within southwest flow due to the synoptic trough to the west over the Great Basin. The low-level jet is helping to perpetuate the current convection, but it should continue on its way out this morning, and by afternoon, most locations should be dry in between perturbations. The next wave comes tonight as a cold front approaches from the northwest. This front will not likely make it into the CWA during the short term forecast, but will be influenced by leftover morning convection. With increased moisture and another impulse being kicked into the area, more rain will be possible, although coming up precip chances is tough. Made little change to dewpoint, temperatures, and sky cover from the previous forecast, but did favor our north for POPs tonight, closer to the front and where we think the small scale impulse will have the biggest effect. Strengthening of the low- level jet tonight will aid in the production of storms and could lead to an MCS containing severe weather, especially in our northwest by late evening into the overnight. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 421 AM CDT Sun Sep 4 2016 There will be southwest flow at the beginning of the period, then becomes more zonal by Thursday and turns to northwest flow by Saturday. Through the period, there are several upper level waves that move through the area. Each of them bring some chances for thunderstorms. Monday continues to have a break in the thunderstorm activity. There is not a wave moving through the area and the front that is developing to the northwest is far enough to the northwest to not be a problem for the area. Temperatures will remain on the warm side. By Monday night there is an upper level wave that approaches and the front sags to the south. Do not really expect much during the evening and the better chance will be overnight. The period Tuesday through Wednesday the southwest flow continues with a few waves that move through. The front wavers and the location is different in nearly every model. Have kept chances in the forecast through most of the period. The strongest of the waves appears to be Tuesday night and this is when the PoPs are the highest. The upper flow turns zonal and gradually to the northwest for Wednesday night through Saturday. The front weakens and is less of a focal point during the period. There are still some chances for thunderstorms but they are lower chances and not for all of the area. By Saturday, the forecast is dry again. Temperatures will be cooling off again going into next weekend. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z KGRI/KEAR TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1246 PM CDT Sun Sep 4 2016 The TAF sites will be under MVFR conditions through the beginning of the TAF period before ceiling become more in the 5K foot range. There will be a chance for thunderstorms later this evening that could impact the terminals, during which time the conditions may go to MVFR or even IFR. The timing is a little uncertain at this time but it should be around 00 for KEAR and perhaps closer to 02Z for KGRI. The other concern is the low level wind shear later this evening as the low level jet kicks in.
