...AVIATION UPDATE...

.UPDATE...
ISSUED AT 1135 AM CDT THU MAR 24 2016

CANCELLED THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SEVERAL COUNTIES IN
EASTERN IA AS THE PRECIPITATION HAS ENDED...AND ROADS WERE JUST
WET ACCORDING TO CALLS TO LAW ENFORCEMENT. WE ARE EXPECTING TO
EXPIRE THE OTHER COUNTIES IN THE ADVISORY AT NOON.

COMPLICATED WEATHER SITUATION CONTINUES WITH NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS
EARLY TO MID MORNING PRODUCING MAINLY PEA SIZE HAIL. IN FAR
NORTHWEST ILLINOIS THE COLUMN IS COLD ENOUGH FOR MAINLY ALL SNOW.
JUST AS THE STORMS IN NW IL HAD ENDED NEW STORMS HAVE FIRED UP IN
PORTIONS OF SE IA NEAR THE IMPRESSIVE UPPER LOW TRACKING EASTWARD
INTO THE CWA. VERY COLD AIR ALOFT (-25 C 500 HPA) WAS LEADING TO
STEEP LAPSE RATES. WITH THE STRONG DYNAMICS AND COLDER AIR
SPREADING SOUTHWARD THE PRECIPITATION WILL BE CHANGING TO ALL
SNOW OVER THE ENTIRE CWA BY EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. THE SNOW WILL BE
MAINLY LIGHT EXCEPT BRIEF HEAVIER SNOWFALL RATES WILL OCCUR IN ANY
THUNDERSNOWS THAT OCCUR. WITH ROAD PAVEMENT AND SURFACE
TEMPERATURES IN THE 30S ANY ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE MAINLY ON
GRASSY SURFACES. TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE 30S THE REMAINDER OF
THE DAY WITH THE PRECIPITATION EXITING OUR CWA BY LATE THIS
AFTERNOON.

UPDATE ISSUED AT 709 AM CDT THU MAR 24 2016

IOWA DOT IS NOW REPORTING 100 PERCENT ICE IN NORTHERN DELAWARE
COUNTY DUE TO THE COMBINATION OF THE LIGHT FREEZING RAIN AND
THUNDERSTORMS WITH COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF SMALL HAIL. HAIL IS
OCCURRING...AND PHOTOS CONFIRM THAT THIS IS NOT SLEET...AS IT IS
PEA TO DIME SIZE. THERE IS JUST A TREMENDOUS VOLUME OF IT.
TEMPERATURES ARE HOVERING NEAR FREEZING...THUS...THE SLICK
CONDITIONS MAY NOT IMPROVE FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND AN ADVISORY HAS
BEEN ISSUED THROUGH NOON.

UPDATE ISSUED AT 616 AM CDT THU MAR 24 2016

CHAOS IS RULING THE MORNING SO FAR...AS THE NORTH HAS NOW LIT UP
WITH SMALL CORE THUNDERSTORMS WITH COPIOUS PEA HAIL. HAIL HAS
COVERED THE GROUND IN SOME SPOTS...AND HAS ALLOWED FOR PARTIAL
COVERAGE OF ROADS IN SOME LOCATIONS. THUS...WITH TEMPERATURES
HOVERING NEAR FREEZING...I AM PUSHING BORDERLINES OF NEEDING A
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY. THAT SAID...MESO MODEL GUIDANCE IS
SOLIDLY SAYING THAT THIS CONVECTION SHOULD WANE SOON...AND SHIFT
SOUTHEAST. FOR NOW...WILL KEEP USING SOCIAL MEDIA AND SPS TO
HIGHLIGHT THIS NON TYPICAL FROZEN PCPN THREAT.

&&

.SYNOPSIS...
ISSUED AT 315 AM CDT THU MAR 24 2016

CONVECTION ROLLED OVER THE ENTIRE CWA IN A RAPIDLY MOVING BAND
LATE THIS PAST EVENING AND EARLY MORNING HOURS...WITH MOST SITES
SEEING A BIT OF THUNDER...GUSTY WINDS...HEAVY DOWNPOURS...AND A
RATHER IMPRESSIVE 2 MINUTES OF PEA SIZE HAIL.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(TODAY AND TONIGHT)
ISSUED AT 315 AM CDT THU MAR 24 2016

TEMPERATURES ARE NOW HOVERING NEAR 32 IN OUR NORTHERN CWA...BUT
THE RAIN HAS LIFTED OUT AS THE DRY SLOT HAS MOVED IN. THUS...WHILE
THE ATMOSPHERE SUPPORTS A POSSIBLE ICING HAZARD...A LACK OF RAIN
AND SNOW SHOULD KEEP THAT FROM HAPPENING...AT LEAST THROUGH
SUNRISE TODAY. TODAY WILL BE AN EXCEPTIONALLY CHALLENGING DAY...AS
MODELS RANGE IN HANDLING THE UPPER SYSTEM AS MOVES OVER THE
CWA...FROM SCATTERED LIGHT SHOWERS/LIGHT SNOW TO A FULL BLOWN
STRONG DEFORMATION ZONE SNOW/RAIN. THIS SYSTEM THUS FAR HAS BEEN
SOMEWHAT DISJOINTED IN PCPN PLACEMENT. THE QUESTION IS...WHETHER
THE UPPER LOW WILL STRONGLY INTERACT WITH MOISTURE TODAY...AND IF
IT DOES...HOW MUCH SNOW RESULTS. OVER ALL...MODELS HAVE BEEN
OVERDONE ON MOISTURE PRODUCTION WITH THIS SYSTEM OUTSIDE OF THE
NARROW DEFORMATION ZONE TO OUR NORTH. THIS SEEMS NOT THE TIME TO
JUMP ON THE MOST AGGRESSIVE SOLUTIONS TODAY...AND CENTRALIZED
GUIDANCE FROM WPC SUGGEST THE SAME. THAT SAID...I DO EXPECT A BAND
OF WIDESPREAD COVERAGE RAIN/SNOW TO IMPACT THE CWA DURING THE MID
MORNING THROUGH MID AFTERNOON HOURS. SOME GRASSY WET ACCUMULATIONS
OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE...WITH A WET INCH BEING THE MOST LIKELY
IMPACT ON GRASS...WHICH WOULD PROBABLY BE A SLUSH ON ROADS.

THE TIMING OF THE ONSET OF NEW RAIN AND SNOW SEEMS IMPORTANT HERE.
IT SHOULD BE MID MORNING...ALLOWING FOR SOME MINIMAL WARMING OF
SURFACES...NOT AIR THROUGH RADIATION PROCESSES. THAT SHOULD OFFSET
ANY FREEZING RAIN/SLEET/SNOW SLICKNESS ON ROADS. HOWEVER...WILL
MENTION POSSIBLE SLICK SPOTS IN THE HWO TODAY AND PUBLIC GRAPHICS TO
COVER THE LOWER THREAT OF SLICKNESS. IN ANY CASE...ANY SNOW ON GRASS
AND ELEVATED SURFACES WILL BE GONE BY MID MORNING FRIDAY AS WE WARM
UP AGAIN.

WINDS TODAY WILL BE BREEZY NORTH FROM THE NORTHEAST...AND LIGHT
ACROSS THE SOUTH THIS MORNING AS THE LOW PASSES BY. LATER THIS
AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...NORTH TO NORTHWEST WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH
ARE EXPECTED.

.LONG TERM...(FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY)
ISSUED AT 315 AM CDT THU MAR 24 2016

THE ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN WILL CONTINUE THE REMAINDER OF THE MONTH
AN INTO EARLY NEXT MONTH. DATA ALSO INDICATES THERE WILL BE A CHANGE
IN THE OVERALL FLOW ACROSS THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE AROUND THE END OF
THE MONTH.

QUIET AND DRY CONDITIONS WILL BE SEEN ACROSS THE AREA FRIDAY AS HIGH
PRESSURE MOVES INTO THE GREAT LAKES. TEMPERATURES SHOULD AVERAGE
RIGHT AROUND NORMAL.

THE QUIET AND DRY CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE FRIDAY EVENING AS THE
NEXT FRONT APPROACHES THE AREA FROM THE PLAINS. LATE FRIDAY NIGHT
LIGHT RAIN WILL BEGIN MOVING INTO THE AREA. SOME SNOW MAY MIX WITH
THE RAIN PRIOR TO SUNRISE FOR AREAS NORTH OF HIGHWAY 30.

SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT THE FRONT WILL SLOWLY MOVE ACROSS THE
AREA. LIGHT RAIN WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA DURING THE DAY SATURDAY
AND CONTINUE INTO SATURDAY NIGHT. SOME SNOW MAY MIX IN WITH THE RAIN
ACROSS THE NORTHWEST HALF OF THE AREA LATE SATURDAY NIGHT.

SUNDAY ON...

SUNDAY INTO SUNDAY NIGHT THE MODELS DISAGREE ON WHETHER THE FRONT
EXITS THE AREA OR STALLS AS ANOTHER LOW MOVES UP ALONG THE FRONT
FROM THE SOUTHERN PLAINS. AS SUCH THE MODEL CONSENSUS HAS SLIGHT
CHANCE TO TO CHANCE POPS FOR MOST OF THE AREA SUNDAY AND THE
SOUTHEAST HALF OF THE AREA SUNDAY NIGHT. PRECIPITATION SHOULD BE
MAINLY IN THE FORM OF RAIN BUT A RAIN/SNOW MIX MAY DEVELOP LATE
SUNDAY NIGHT BEFORE ENDING.

MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...THE MODEL CONSENSUS HAS DRY CONDITIONS AS
HIGH PRESSURE MOVES ACROSS THE MIDWEST. TEMPERATURES SHOULD AVERAGE
ABOVE NORMAL.

TUESDAY NIGHT...THE MODEL CONSENSUS HAS SLIGHT CHANCE POPS AS RETURN
FLOW BRINGS MOISTURE BACK INTO THE AREA.

ON WEDNESDAY...THE MODEL CONSENSUS HAS SLIGHT CHANCE TO CHANCE POPS
AS ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM MOVES OUT OF THE PLAINS.

&&

.AVIATION...(FOR THE 18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z FRIDAY AFTERNOON)
ISSUED AT 1225 PM CDT THU MAR 24 2016

IFR/OCNL MVFR CONDS THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON WITH OCNL LIGHT RAIN
AND SNOW AT KMLI/KBRL. CONDS WILL BECOME VFR AT ALL TAF SITES THIS
EVENING AND CONTINUE INTO FRIDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE MOVES INTO
THE AREA. NORTH WINDS 15 TO 25 KNOTS THIS AFTERNOON BECOMING
VARIABLE LESS THAN 5 KNOTS LATER TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
ISSUED AT 356 PM CDT WED MAR 23 2016

HEAVY RAINFALL FROM LAST WEEK ACROSS WISCONSIN AND MINNESOTA IS
ROUTING THROUGH THE RIVERS SOUTH INTO OUR AREA. THIS MEANS THAT
MISSISSIPPI RIVER WILL LIKELY EXPERIENCE RISES AND POSSIBLE
FLOODING. TODAYS CURRENT FORECAST TAKES INTO ACCOUNT QPF OVER THE
NEXT 24 HOURS TO OUR NORTH. IF THE FORECAST QPF IS LOWER THAN
FORECAST...RISES ON AREA RIVERS WILL BE LESS. REGARDLESS OF THIS...
THE ROUTED WATER WILL LEAD TO FLOODING AT SOME MISSISSIPPI RIVER
SITES. THE MAGNITUDE OF THIS FLOODING IS STILL UNCERTAIN AT THIS
TIME.
