...WINTER STORM WARNING IS CANCELLED...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN FAIRBANKS HAS CANCELLED THE
WINTER STORM WARNING. 

THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL HAS ENDED...HOWEVER ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL OF
UP TO 2 INCHES IS POSSIBLE THIS MORNING. SNOW WILL END BY LATE
AFTERNOON.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Models in decent agreement through 60 hours. Strong cold upper
level low in the high arctic about 450 NM north of Demarcation
Point is moving southeast and will be on the southwestern tip of
Banks Island by early Wednesday morning. The trailing arctic front
is currently positioned over Northern Alaska and lies just to the
north of Seward peninsula and along the south crest of the Brooks
Range.

The front will continue to sag further south but weaken through
Tuesday. The strong westerly flow aloft and the lift provided by
the front has produced a large area of heavy precipitation from
the Seward Peninsula to the Middle Tanana Valley and the
precipitation band is moving eastward.

As the front weakens... the precipitation will diminish on
Tuesday. But the upper level low will send down another
reinforcing cold shot to Northern Alaska but will not likely push
as far sough as the Central Interior. The Eastern Brooks Range
will see temperatures cold enough for snowfall by Tue night though.

Precipitation has turned over to snow at Barrow today but will
likely revert back to rain showers by evening.

Another low awaiting its turn is positioned in the North Pacific.
It will move into the Bering Sea by early Wednesday morning.
Although the surface low dos not appear to advance onto land it
will remain in the Western Bering. The occluded front will push
inland and shover the ridge of high pressure eastward. It will
send a decent precipitation shield through the Central Interior on
Thursday and Friday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Stratiform precipitation continues over the southern interior
tonight, while the atmosphere farther north continues to
destabilize. It still appears likely to become unstable enough
to allow the development of isolated thunderstorms in at least
the eastern half of zone 220 this evening, but really really
isolated. By this time Tuesday, expect all of the eastern interior
to be in a showery regime, but mostly just low- topped stuff, with
thunderstorm potential limited to zones 220 and 224.

.HYDROLOGY...
A Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday morning for the
Middle Tanana Valley. The Chena River and the Little Chena River
are expected to be near bankfull and may cause minor flooding is
some areas based on the amount of rainfall already received which
in many places is in excess of 2 inches. A wide swath of
precipitation in excess of 1 inch exists between Eielson AFB and
the Seward Peninsula based on model data. More rain is in store
for the remainder of the week.

THE UNALAKLEET RIVER WILL BE RUNNING NEAR BANKFULL THE NEXT FEW
DAYS AND COMBINED WITH THE HIGH TIDES MAY EXCEED BANKFULL FOR
SHORT PERIODS. LOW LYING AREAS NEAR THE MOUTH AND JUST UPSTREAM
MAY BECOME INUNDATED DURING THE HIGH TIDES...BUT AT THIS TIME NO
SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IS EXPECTED.

WITH MORE RAIN ON THE WAY OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS THERE IS
POTENTIAL FOR HIGHER WATER LEVELS...SO CAUTION SHOULD BE USED AND
ANYTHING NEAR THE RIVER SHOULD BE MOVED TO HIGHER GROUND IF
POSSIBLE.
