.DISCUSSION...

Upper Air...
A high amplitude upper level ridge over the central
and eastern parts of northern Alaska will move eastward
becoming a broad high centered over the central Yukon
Territory by Wednesday evening. The high will be centered
over the western Northwest Territories by Thursday afternoon
with weak ridging extending into northeastern Alaska.

A strong upper low centered 500 nm west of St Lawrence Island
will weak while moving to 350 nm west of Wrangel Island by
late Wednesday night. A short wave trough extending from
the Gulf of Anadyr southeastward will move northward to
extend from the Chukchi Sea to eastern Norton Sound
by late tonight, then move northward into the western
Beaufort Sea by noon Wednesday.

A second short wave trough rotating around the upper low will
move northeastward to extend from St Lawrence Island to the
Nunivak Island area by noon Thursday, then into the Chukchi Sea by
late Thursday night.

A weak impulse southwest of the western Aleutians will deepen
into an upper low centered 500 nm southwest of St Lawrence Island
by Thursday afternoon then move to 500 nm west of St Lawrence
Island by Friday afternoon as it mergers with another low farther
to the west. A strong short wave trough rotating around this low
will move northward across the west coast Friday night into
Saturday afternoon.

Surface...
Weak high pressure across the interior will persist
through Wednesday while shifting slowly northeastward.
A 949 mb low centered 500 nm west of St Lawrence Island
will weaken to a 976 mb low 350 nm west of Wrangel Island
by late Wednesday night.

The weather front associated with this low will move
northeastward to lie from the Chukotsk Peninsula to Dall
Point and southward by late this morning, then weaken as it
moves northward to the Chukchi Sea coast by around midnight
tonight. Another weather front is expected to move northeastward
to extend from the Gulf of Anadyr to Dall Point and southeastward
by Friday evening.

Central interior...
Mostly clear or partly cloudy skies continuing through Friday
under high pressure aloft.

Arctic Coast...
Most areas will experience clear or partly cloudy skies through
Thursday night. Central and westerN areas will see increasing
clouds Friday. Areas near Cape Lisburne will see south to
southeast winds gusting to 50 mph today and tonight.

West coast...
High surf conditions will continue over the Chukchi Sea
coast northwest of Cape Krusenstern, the southern Seward
Peninsula coast, south and west facing shores of the
Bering Strait Coast and St Lawrence Island, and the
Yukon Delta. The highest storm surge, 3.5 to 5 feet is
expected along the coast from Cape Darby to the Bering
Strait this afternoon through this evening.

Southeast winds gusting to 60 mph over the Chukchi Sea
Coast north of Kivalina are expected to continue through
this evening.

South winds gusting to as high as 70 mph are expected
to continue over St Lawrence Island through around noon
today and along the Bering Strait coast through around
6 pm this evening.

Rain is expected over the centraL and western Seward Peninsula,
the Bering Strait and St Lawrence Island today, with the frontal
rain band moving to the remainder of the west coast and western
interior tonight.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
There is potential for another episode of high surf conditions
Thursday evening through Friday on St Lawrence Island, and
Friday into Friday night over Norton Sound as strong south
to southeast winds aloft develop in advance of another
northward moving weather front.
