Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Models in good agreement through 60 hours. After that models
diverge in handling the position an track of main feature which
will be the monster upper level high parked over the north
Pacific.

Large upper trough complex positioned north of the Arctic Coast
and extending into Far East Russia. Ridge will amplify northward
and deepen upper level trough to the west near Kamchatka Peninsula
by Saturday night.

Next in the series of moisture impulses will move through the West
Coast through today bringing another round of heavy snow and wind.
This will move through primarily the northern portion of the
zones. This will leave the areas such as the Lower Yukon Valley
and the Yukon Delta as well as the Upper Kuskokwim Valley to be
less impacted. Only the Nulato Hills of the Lower Yukon Valley
will see much impact from this next round of snow.

Winds have developed across much of the area and will continue to
strengthen through this afternoon and evening. This will likely
contribute to power outages as snow laden trees and limbs fall
into the power lines.

Expect snowfall amounts on this impending bout of snow could be
potentially more destructive than the first round given the wind
element along with the additional heavy snow already on heavy
snow laden trees. Blizzard and winter storm warnings are in effect
for much of the West Coast today and into tonight.

Coastal Flood threat issues on the West Coast will continue
through at least early Sunday. This is being brought on by strong
southwesterly to south winds over most of the West Coast. At this
point there is no way to accurately determine the coastal flood
potential given the ice pack. It is known that much of the ice
will be broken up or is breaking up and this will further affect
the ongoing potential for additional flooding with the break up of
the ice.

Blizzard conditions are occurring on the Southern Seward Peninsula
now. Snow will eventually turn over to rain this evening and then
conditions will improve. St. Lawrence Island is has rain and snow
but should go back to all snow late this afternoon.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
