Will be confining the best timing of strong storms to more of a 4 to
10 PM EDT time frame, with the main focus for strongest storms and
aforementioned severe threats most likely across the northern half
of our CWA. A little less impressed with the Flash Flood potential
given the trend northward and toward a more progressive system,
nevertheless given the amount of rainfall over northern portions of
the FA last night and the potential for periods of heavy rainfall
will leave watch as is for now.

Issued at 1119 AM EDT Thu Jun 25 2015

...Severe Threat and Heavy Rain Evening into Overnight...

Things are pretty quiet across the CWA at this hour. Surface
analysis shows the main synoptic warm front stretching central IN,
southeastward to SW Ohio at this hour. This is considerably further
north than previous data had suggested, which will have an impact on
storm modes/threats later this evening. Although the main front is
further north, there may still be local boundaries due to
differntial heating or recent rainfall that could help to back
surface winds/pool moisture.

Currently, the Ohio River Valley sits under zonal flow aloft, with
an upstream shortwave trough set to amplify into the middle
Mississippi River Valley overnight. We'll see a response in the low
level jet and overall shear profile/forcing as this happens later
this evening, helping to force a line of strong/severe storms across
the area. Meanwhile, surface low that currently sits near St. Louis
will move east across southern IN ahead of the trough.

Latest data continues to indicate that some convection will begin to
get going with moisture pooling/destabilization by mid to late
afternoon, however feel these storms may struggle a bit until the
better forcing arrives later in the evening. Can't completely rule
out a few strong and even rotating storms in the 4 PM to 8 PM time
frame, but overall think that best response in low and mid level
winds and ultimate shear profile will occur later.

Main show looks to be between 8 PM to 3 AM when the main forced line
moves through. Expect storm mode to be chacterized by a broken line
with bowing segments and perhaps some supercell structures,
especially across our northern CWA closer to the warm front.
Overall, best overlap between shear/forcing and instability will be
north of the Bluegrass Parkway through southern IN. Southern KY will
get more unstable, but better shear/forcing will be north so think
the severe threat will be more isolated and more limited to
multicell clusters.

Main threats will be pockets of damaging winds along with very heavy
rainfall and excessive cloud to ground lightning. Secondary threats
will be for hail with any supercell and an isolated tornado or two
across our northern CWA.

Heavy rain threat is still on the table with the main line and PWAT
values north of 2 inches through the column. Most concerned about
areas north of I-64 where the most training could occur. Areas
further south will see a bit more progressive rainfall, but still
could be intense enough to cause some problems. Overall, Flash Flood
Watch looks good, but may extend it a couple hours longer to account
for storms lingering in the east.

Overall confidence is medium for this event. Main limiting factor
appears to be the slight disconnect between most unstable part of
the day, and the later arrival of better dynamics, which could
mitigate severe threat as we get into the overnight and turn things
more into a heavy rain concern.

.SHORT TERM (Now through Saturday)...

...Multiple rounds of storms today with severe storms and flooding
possible through tonight...

Complex weather forecast in the short term as overnight mesoscale
convective system continues to hang together and cross the CWA.
Torrential rains have been the most common element with these, but
flood reports have been limited to the Louisville metro due to hour
of the day.  Most maximum wind gusts per KY Mesonet have been in the
35-45 mph range, though we have received reports of a few trees down
with stronger storms from spotters and county dispatches.

As is always the case with these large overnight MCS's, the forecast
for the subsequent periods is dependent upon residual boundaries and
cloud cover. That being said, the next round could be as early as
this afternoon with southwest to northeast moving storms ahead of
the main event - passage of a cold front - this evening and
overnight. Damaging wind will be the greatest threat, as high
temperatures and precipitable water will result in more rain than
large hail. There is also a chance that a supercell or two could tap
into one of the many surface boundaries to bring some rotation to
the ground as a tornado, but this should not be considered a
widespread threat.

The greatest chance for flash flooding will be along and north of
the I-64, where the proximity of the surface low associated with
this evening's cold front passage will be such that extended
rainfall is likely, while areas farther south will have a greater
wind threat as storms line up ahead of the front. However, that
doesn't preclude any location from seeing a gully-washer.

The bulk of the storm activity should be over well before sunrise
Saturday, but some post-frontal showers will likely linger,
especially north of I-64.

After Highs in the 80s today, temperatures will drop into the 60s
tonight, then only rebound into the lower 70s on Saturday.

.LONG TERM (Saturday Night through Thursday)...
Issued at 200 AM EDT Fri Jun 26 2015

The upper level trough deepens over the Great Lakes and eastern
CONUS later this weekend and with high pressure at the surface,
Sunday is still looking like a nice, dry day with lower humidity and
highs in the 75 to 80 degree range.

For Monday, pivoting shortwave trough within the main upper level
trough will pass through. Scattered showers and storms ahead of the
associated surface low and cold front could arrive as early as the
pre-dawn hours across southern Indiana. Scattered coverage is then
expected to work SE across the CWA ahead of the front through the
day. Isolated to widely scattered activity will linger into the late
evening mainly across the southern CWA. Highs around 80 and lows in
the 60s are expected.

The flow becomes slightly more zonal by mid week but subtle
shortwaves still look to pass through. As such, will maintain slight
chances, 20 to 30 percent, for mainly diurnal instability driven
showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the low/mid 80s with lows in the
60s.

Model timing differences creep up by late week as deterministic
guidance suggests another shortwave could arrive Thursday or Friday.

After starting out below normal Sunday  with highs in the 70s and
lows in the upper 50s to low 60s, a slow moderation will take place
through next week. Though readings will likely remain near or
slightly below normal. Plan on highs in the low/mid 80s and
overnight lows in the 60s.

.AVIATION (18Z TAF Update)...

VFR will prevail the rest of this early and mid afternoon with light
and variable winds and Sct cu development.

As we move into the early evening, scattered to numerous strong
thunderstorms are expected to organize to our west ahead of an
approaching strong upper disturbance and its associated shortwave.
These thunderstorms are expected to impact all TAF sites with
anticipated timing/impacts below:

SDF: Best timing looks to be between 5 and 9 PM EDT for strongest
storms, however T-storm threat will likely linger until around
Midnight EDT. Have included mention of 3 SM visibility, with periods
of visibility below 2 miles. Strong gusty winds will also be
possible in any t-storm.

LEX: Best timing looks to be between 7 and 10 PM EDT for strongest
storms, however T-storm threat will likely linger until the pre-dawn
hours. Same impacts as SDF.

BWG: Expect storm coverage to be a little more scattered down south
with VCTS as early as 3 PM CDT and best coverage between 6 PM and
Midnight. Same impacts as SDF/LEX.

Post storm winds will be variable through the pre-dawn hours before
a cold frontal passage toward dawn. Some MVFR ceilings will likely
hang around in the post storm environment as well.
