MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0035
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1052 AM CST WED JAN 19 2011

AREAS AFFECTED...S-CNTRL/SERN NEB AND N-CNTRL/NERN KS

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 191652Z - 192045Z

SNOWFALL RATES WILL REACH 1 INCH PER HOUR...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER
AMOUNTS...IN SNOW BANDS ACROSS S-CNTRL/SERN NEB AND N-CNTRL/NERN KS
THIS AFTERNOON.

A SHIELD OF MDT SNOW...WITH EMBEDDED BANDS OF HVY SNOW...IS SHIFTING
EWD/NEWD ACROSS CNTRL NEB AND NERN KS. THIS ACTIVITY IS BEING
SUPPORTED BY LOW/MID-LEVEL ISENTROPIC UPGLIDE ATOP THE COLD AIRMASS
ENTRENCHED ACROSS THE NRN PLAINS AND UPPER MIDWEST. SNOWFALL RATES
COULD INTENSIFY THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AS THE SNOW MOVES ACROSS THE
DISCUSSION AREA IN RESPONSE TO LOW/MID-LEVEL FRONTOGENESIS AHEAD OF
A SHORTWAVE TROUGH APPROACHING THE REGION. THIS WILL BE FURTHER
SUPPORTED BY CONVERGENCE AT THE NOSE OF A 35-40-KT 850-MB JET
LEADING THE LOW-LEVEL TROUGH. FORECAST SOUNDINGS INDICATE THAT THE
ASCENT WILL COINCIDE WITH A DEEP DENDRITIC LAYER...PROMOTING
EFFICIENT SNOW GROWTH. FURTHERMORE...SNOW-TO-LIQUID RATIOS WILL BE
ENHANCED BY THE ANTECEDENT COLD AIRMASS...WITH SNOWFALL RATES IN
HEAVIER BANDS EXPECTED TO REACH 1 INCH PER HOUR THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON. LOCALLY HIGHER RATES WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE.
