The nearest sounding before it

Dodge City, (KDDC), launched 12:00Z, 8.7 hours before the alert went out and 38 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2020
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

AREAS AFFECTED...WRN KS

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 192042Z - 192145Z

THE POTENTIAL FOR DMGG WIND GUSTS AND HAIL WILL INCREASE THIS
AFTERNOON ACROSS PORTIONS OF WRN KS. A WW IS NOT CURRENTLY
ANTICIPATED...BUT CONVECTIVE TRENDS WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED.

CONVECTION HAS INCREASED THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE OK
PANHANDLE AND FAR SWRN KS IN RESPONSE TO AN UPPER IMPULSE OVER FAR
SERN CO. STRONG BOUNDARY LAYER HEATING HAS RESULTED IN TEMPERATURES
CLIMBING INTO THE LOW 100S...WITH A SUBSEQUENT STEEPENING OF
LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND SFC T-TD SPREADS EXCEEDING 50 DEG F. STEEP
MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES /NEAR 8 DEG C PER KM/ WITHIN AN EML PLUME ALONG
WITH STRONG BOUNDARY LAYER HEATING HAS RESULTED IN MLCAPE VALUES
BETWEEN 1000-1500 J/KG. THE PRIMARY HAZARD IS EXPECTED TO BE DMGG
DOWNBURST WIND GUSTS /PRIMARILY VIA EVAPORATIVE COOLING/...WITH ANY
THREAT EXPECTED TO REMAIN ISOLATED OVER THE NEXT 1-2 HRS DUE TO WEAK
DEEP-LAYER FLOW/EFFECTIVE SHEAR FAVORING PULSE CONVECTION.
HOWEVER...SHOULD A COLD POOL CONSOLIDATE AND SPREAD NWD...A MORE
WIDESPREAD THREAT OF DMGG WIND GUSTS COULD MATERIALIZE.
ADDITIONALLY...GIVEN THE PRESENCE OF STEEP MIDLEVEL LAPSE
RATES...THE POTENTIAL FOR HAIL MAY ALSO ACCOMPANY THE STRONGEST
CORES.

WITH TIME...MEAN STEERING FLOW OUT OF THE S-SW WILL EVENTUALLY SHIFT
PRIMARY FOCUS FOR CONVECTION INTO W-CNTRL/NWRN KS...WHERE RICHER
BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE/GREATER POTENTIAL INSTABILITY IS IN PLACE.
ADDITIONALLY...A QUASI-STATIONARY LOW-LEVEL BAROCLINIC ZONE
/ANALYZED AT THE SFC FROM 25 SW GLD TO 20 NW RSL/ MAY SERVE AS AN
ADDITIONAL FOCUS FOR INCREASING TSTM COVERAGE LATER THIS AFTERNOON.
