SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
245 AM MST THU AUG 17 2000

.SYNOPSIS...
LOW PRESSURE ALOFT OVER NORTHERN BAJA...COUPLED WITH REMNANTS OF OLD
TROPICAL STORM BERYL MOVING OVER SOUTHEAST ARIZONA...WILL RESULT IN
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER MUCH OF SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH-CENTRAL
ARIZONA INTO THE WEEKEND...INCLUDING FAR SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FRIDAY
NIGHT. HEAVY RAINFALL WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH SOME STORMS AND A FLASH
FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR SOUTH-CENTRAL ARIZONA TONIGHT. AS THE
REMNANTS OF BERYL MOVE NORTH...CONDITIONS WILL IMPROVE OVER THE AREA
THIS WEEKEND...RETURNING TO A NORMAL MONSOON REGIME WITH CHANCES OF
AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDERSTORMS ON THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF SOUTH-
CENTRAL ARIZONA AND SLIGHT CHANCES ON THE DESERTS...WITH SOUTHEAST
CALIFORNIA STAYING MOSTLY CLEAR TO PARTLY CLOUDY.

.DISCUSSION...
SOME OF THE WHAT IS LEFT OF TS BERYL IS STILL HEADED THIS WAY...AND
LOW LEVEL MOISTURE HAS INCREASED ON THE DESERTS DUE TO GULF SURGE AND
OUTFLOW FROM STORMS LAST NIGHT AND EARLY THIS MORNING. 18Z SOUNDINGS
INDICATE P-WATER HAS INCREASED AGAIN...WITH AN INCH AND TWO-THIRDS AT
YUMA AND ALMOST AN INCH AND A HALF AT PHOENIX. FLASH FLOOD WATCH HAS
BEEN ISSUED FOR SOUTH-CENTRAL ARIZONA FOR TONIGHT...INCLUDING ALL OF
MARICOPA...NW PINAL AND SRN GILA COUNTIES AND COMMUNITIES THEREIN.
QPF ESTIMATED IN EXCESS OF AN INCH FOR MUCH OF THE SOUTH-CENTRAL AZ
REGION...WITH MOST OF IT EXPECTED OVERNIGHT. FOR CONTINUITY...WILL GO
ALONG WITH THE IDEA OF THE AVN AND KEEP A MENTION OF STORMS IN FAR SW
AZ AND FAR SE CA FOR FRI NIGHT...ALTHOUGH THE ETA IMPLIES OTHERWISE.
LOOKS LIKE THE MAIN EVENT...INVOLVING REMNANTS OF BERYL...WILL BE
OVER FRI NIGHT...WITH A RETURN TO GENERAL MONSOON WEATHER. HOWEVER...
MODELS INDICATE AT LEAST THE ERN HALF OF THE CWA WILL REMAIN IN AN
AREA OF DEFORMATION UNDER UPPER-LEVEL DIFLUENCE...AND STORMS WILL BE
DEVELOPING ON THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND DRIFTING OFF TO LOWER ELEVATIONS
IN THE EVENING AND STEERING FLOW WILL BE TOUGH TO CALL. THEREFORE...
A GENERAL CHANCE OF STORMS FOR ERN PORTIONS OF CWA FOR THE EXTENDED
PERIOD SHOULD SUFFICE. WILT
