MODELS ARE CONSISTENT WITH MOVING A MODERATE TO STRONG SHORTWAVE OVER EASTERN MONTANA AND INTO THE WESTERN DAKOTAS TONIGHT. WITH STORMS BECOMING MORE ORGANIZED AND FOCUSED ON THE AREA...THIS PROMPTED A COORDINATION CALL WITH THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER AND LOCAL OFFICES... WITH A DECISION MADE TO PUT MUCH OF OUR AREA UNDER A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND PART OF THIS EVENING. WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS THE UPPER FLOW OVER THE NORTHERN ROCKIES IS MOIST WITH A SHORTWAVE ABOUT TO MOVE INTO SOUTHWESTERN WYOMING. THIS SHORTWAVE WILL CONTINUE TO AID AS A TRIGGER FOR EVENING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH INCREASED DYNAMIC FORCING AND MODERATE INSTABILITIES TO WORK ON. AGREE WITH THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER THAT PRIMARY THREAT WILL BE HAIL. A MOIST AIRMASS IN PLACE SUGGESTS VERY GOOD POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY DOWN-POURS WITH SLOW MEAN STORM MOTIONS SUGGESTING MOST STORMS WILL ONLY CRAWL. A SLIGHTLY WEAKER CYCLONIC FLOW ALOFT FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY WITH A MODERATE TO STRONG SHORTWAVE SHEARING ACROSS NORTHWEST MONTANA.
