000 TTAA00 KRDU 282245 RRA SVRRDU NCC081-282315- BULLETIN - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RALEIGH/DURHAM NC 645 PM EDT MON JUL 28 1997 THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN RALEIGH/DURHAM HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING EFFECTIVE UNTIL 715 PM EDT FOR PEOPLE IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATION... IN NORTH CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA ...GUILFORD COUNTY AT 645 PM THE RALEIGH WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE'S DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CONINUING SOUTH OF GREENSBORO. THIS IS PART OF A STRING OF THUNDERSTORMS ALL ALONG INTERSTATE 85 AND WERE MOVING TO THE EAST AROUND 10 MPH OR LESS. THESE STORMS HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPORTED BY AMATEUR RADIO OPERATORS TO HAVE PEA SIZED HAIL EMBEDDED IN THEM. THESE STORMS ARE CONTINUING TO GROW IN SIZE AND INTENSITY SINCE THIS REPORT. DOWNBURST WINDS FROM A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAN SOMETIMES REACH 100 MPH. A POWERFUL DOWNBURST CAN BE AS BAD AS A TORNADO. THESE WINDS DOWN TREES AND POWER LINES...OVERTURN MOBILE HOMES...AND DAMAGE BUILDINGS.
