SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT...CORRECTION TO 3RD PARAGRAPH
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OKLAHOMA CITY OK
630 PM CDT TUE MAY 29 1990

...TORNADO WATCHES REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM FOR MUCH OF WESTERN
   AND CENTRAL OKLAHOMA...

AT 630 PM CDT A LARGE AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS COVERED MUCH
OF THE WESTERN HALF OF OKLAHOMA. THE THUNDERSTORMS WERE FORMING IN
ADVANCE OF A VIGOROUS UPPER LEVEL TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE WHICH
EXTENDED FROM SOUTHEASTERN COLORADO TO SOUTHWESTERN TEXAS LATE THIS
AFTERNOON. IN THE LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE...A DEEP LOW PRESSURE
SYSTEM WAS CENTERED OVER SOUTHEASTERN COLORADO. A DRY LINE EXTENDED
FROM THE LOW SOUTHEASTWARD TO BETWEEN LUBBOCK AND CHILDRESS, TEXAS...
THEN BACK SOUTHWESTWARD INTO SOUTHWESTERN TEXAS. DESTABILIZATION OF THE
ATMOSPHERE DUE TO MID LEVEL COOLING WITH THE APPROACH OF THE UPPER
LEVEL TROUGH AND STRONG SURFACE HEATING HAS SUPPORTED MIXING OF STRONG
WINDS FROM SEVERAL THOUSAND FEET ABOVE THE SURFACE DOWNWARD...WITH
A CONSEQUENT STRENGTHENING OF THE SOUTHWESTERLY LOW LEVEL FLOW INTO
THE TEXAS PANHANDLE. AS A RESULT...THE DRYLINE HAS ACCELERATED
EASTWARD THROUGH THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE TEXAS PANHANDLE DURING
THE PAST TWO TO THREE HOURS.

AS THE EVENING PROGRESSES...THE LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE WILL
COOL AND STABILIZE IN THE DRY AIR OVER THE TEXAS PANHANDLE...AND THE
STRONG PUSH ON THE DRYLINE WILL DIMINISH. FOR THE NEXT TWO TO THREE
HOURS...HOWEVER...THE MOST FAVORED AREA FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE JUST IN ADVANCE OF THE DRYLINE OVER THE EASTERN
TEXAS PANHANDLE...THE WESTERN PART OF NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS...AND
SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA. STRONG SOUTHEASTERLY LOW LEVEL WINDS IN ADVANCE
OF THE DRYLINE WITH SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW JUST ABOVE THE SURFACE WILL
CONTINUE TO PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT CONDUCIVE TO TORNADIC THUNDERSTORMS
IN THIS AREA...AS WELL.

LATER THIS EVENING...THE AREA OF THUNDERSTORMS GRADUALLY WILL PUSH
EASTWARD...BUT THE THREAT OF TORNADIC STORMS WILL DIMINISH. LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINFALL AND SOME HAIL CAN BE EXPECTED AS THE THUNDERSTORM AREA
GRADUALLY ADVANCES EASTWARD ACROSS MOST OF OKLAHOMA DURING THE NIGHTTIME
HOURS. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT TONIGHT FOR CENTRAL AND EASTERN
OKLAHOMA AND MAY BE EXTENDED WESTWARD LATER THIS EVENING.
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT. STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR TO
COMMERCIAL RADIO OR TELEVISION FORu LATER UPDATES AND WARNINGS.
