SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DES MOINES IA 520 AM CDT SAT APR 22 1989 AT 520 AM...A COUPLE OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WERE MOVING ACROSS CENTRAL IOWA. THE FIRST STORM WAS NEAR OGDEN IN BOONE COUNTY...ABOUT 40 MILES NORTHWEST OF DES MOINES. THIS THUNDERSTORM WILL LIKELY PRODUCE GUSTY WINDS...BRIEF HEAVY RAIN...AND SMALL HAIL AS IT MOVES SOUTHEAST AT 35 MILES AN HOUR. THIS STORM WILL PASS NEAR THE TOWN OF MADRID BETWEEN 530 AND 6 AM. MADRID IS ABOUT 25 MILES NORTHWEST OF DES MOINES. THE SECOND STRONG THUNDERSTORM WAS JUST NORTHWEST OF FORT DODGE. AN INTENSE THUNDERSTORM WAS LOCATED OVER CENTRAL IOWA JUST NORTH OF STORY CITY. THIS THUNDERSTORM IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING HEAVY RAINS... HAIL AND STRONG GUSTY SURFACE WINDS. THE THUNDERSTORM WAS MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 35 MILES AN HOUR AND SHOULD SOUTHEAST OF NEVADA BY 730 AM. NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMVS CONTINUED OVER THE CENTRAL THIRD OF IOWA. THIS PRECIPITATION WAS IN A 70 MILE WIDE BAND THAT WAS EAST OF A LINE FROM OTTUMWA TO WATERLOO TO 40 MILES EAST OF MASON CITY. THESE SHOWERS WERE ALSO MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 35 MILES AN HOUR. DLF
