Special weather statement, Apr 5, 3:04 PM CST, 3 hours 46 minutes before
OKLAHOMA THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OKLAHOMA CITY OK 300 PM CST SAT APR 5 1986 THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OVER THAT PART OF SOUTH CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BOUNDED BY A LINE EXTENDING FROM DURANT TO SEMINOLE TO WAURIKA THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. ANY THUNDERSTORMS WHICH REACH SEVERE LIMITS WILL BE MARGINALLY SEVERE..WITH HAIL UP TO 3/4 INCH IN DIAMETER..AND WILL LAST ONLY A SHORT TIME. WIDELY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS CAN BE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER MOST OF THE SOUTHEASTERN TWO THIRDS OF OKLAHOMA..GENERALLY SOUTHEAST OF A LINE FROM BARTLESVILLE TO ELK CITY. ALL OF THE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY CAN BE EXPECTED TO DECREASE IN INTENSITY A FEW HOURS AFTER SUNSET AND TO DISSIPATE BY MIDNIGHT. THE WEAK PACIFIC COLD FRONT WHICH MOVED ACROSS MOST OF OKLAHOMA YESTERDAY HAS BEGUN TO MOVE NORTHWARD AND EXTENDS FROM NEAR NOWATA TO NEAR VINSON. VERY MOIST AIR HAS MOVED NORTHWARD FROM TEXAS DURING THE PAST FEW HOURS AND COVERS THAT PART OF OKLAHOMA SOUTH OF THE OLD FRONT. THE ATMOSPHERE HAS WARMED AND STABILIZED IN THE MID LEVELS SINCE YESTERDAY..SO THE THUNDERSTORMS WHICH DEVELOP HAVE LESS CHANCE OF BECOMING SEVERE THAN THOSE OF THE PAST TWO DAYS. A WEAK OUTFLOW BOUNDARY FROM THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY WHICH WAS OVER NORTHEASTERN TEXAS LAST NIGHT EXTENDS FROM CENTRAL TEXAS TO SOUTH CENTRAL OKLAHOMA AND HAS ACTED TO FOCUS THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY THIS AFTERNOON. ALSO ASSISTING IN THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT IS A WEAK UPPER LEVEL COLD POCKET WHICH IS MOVING OVER CENTRAL OKLAHOMA THIS AFTER- NOON. THE UPPER LEVEL WINDS ARE RELATIVELY WEAK TODAY..AND THE THUNDERSTORMS ARE BEING DRIVEN LARGELY BY INSTABILITY RESULTING FROM HEATING OF THE MOIST AIR IN THE LOWER PART OF THE ATMOSPHERE BY THE SUN. THUS..MOST OF THE THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP AND DISSIPATE IN LESS THAN AN HOUR. OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES FROM PREVIOUS STORMS WILL FOCUS NEW DEVELOPMENT MAINLY OVER SOUTH CENTRAL AND CENTRAL OKLAHOMA THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING..ALTHOUGH THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE ANYWHERE IN THE MOIST AIR. THE POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE DEVELOPMENT IS NOT HIGH ENOUGH TO MERIT ACTIVATION OF ANY SPOTTER NETWORKS IN OKLAHOMA.
