FLASH FLOOD WARNING
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND RAPIDS MI
846 AM EDT SAT SEP 13 1986

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WARNING 
EFFECTIVE UNTIL 1200 PM EDT FOR PEOPLE IN THE FOLLOWING COUNTY OF

CENTRAL LOWER MICHIGAN...NORTHWEST IONIA

THE BELDING DAM IN NORTHWEST IONIA COUNTY CONTINUES TO HOLD..BUT
OFFICIALS IN BELDING INDICATED AT 830 AM EDT THAT THE DAM IS AT ITS
MOST CRITICAL POINT. THE WATER IS CONTINUING TO RISE AT NEAR ONE
INCH PER HOUR AND THAT THERE ARE 24 INCHES OF WATER NOW FLOWING
OVER THE TOP OF THE DAM. IF THE DAM FAILS..A WALL OF WATER 4 TO 6
FEET DEEP WILL SWEEP DOWN THE FLAT RIVER TOWARD THE CITY OF BELDING
 ONE HALF HOUR LATER..THE CITY OF SMYRNA WILL RECEIVE THE WATER..
THE SURGE ESTIMATED AT 2 TO 4 FEET. THE OFFICIALS AT THE DAM SAID
THAT OVER A MILLION GALLONS OF WATER PER MINUTE IS NOW FLOWING OVER
THE TOP OF THE DAM.

A FLASH FLOOD WARNING MEANS FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN
REPORTED. TAKE ACTION TO SAFEGUARD LIFE AND PROPERTY.

 PERSONS ON OR NEAR THE FLAT RIVER IN THE CITIES OF BELDING AND
 SMYRNA SHOULD TAKE PRECAUTIONS NOW AND MONIT-OR THIS SITUATION
 CLOSELY..AND EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY. IF THE DAM FAILS FLOODING IS
 IMMINENT..TAKE ACTION TO SAFEGUARD LIFE AND PROPERTY
