FLASH FLOOD WARNING
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND RAPIDS MI
510 AM EDT SAT SEP 13 1986

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WARNING
EFFECTIVE UNTIL 900 AM EDT FOR PEOPLE IN THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES OF

SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN...NORTHWEST IONIA

THE BELDING DAM IN IONIA COUNTY WILL FAIL THIS MORNING DUE TO THE VERY
HEAVY FLOOD WATERS COMING DOWNSTREAM FROM GREENVILLE. OFFICIALS IN
BELDING REPORT THAT ANOTHER HALF FOOT OF WATER WILL REACH THE DAM IN
THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. WHEN THE DAM BREAKS..UP TO EIGHT FEET OF WATER
WILL SWEEP DOWN THE FLAT RIVER TOWARDS THE CITY OF BELDING. ONE HALF
HOUR AFTER THAT..THE CITY OF SMYRNA WILL RECEIVE UP TO SIX FEET OF
WATER.

PERSONS ON OR NEAR THE FLAT RIVER IN THE CITIES OF BELDING AND SMYRNA
SHOULD EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY. FLOODING IS IMMINENT. TAKE ACTION
TO SAFEGUARD LIFE AND PROPERTY.
