Alerts in force

An Air Quality Alert is issued by the National Weather Service on behalf of a state or local agency when pollution is expected to reach a level that harms health. An Air Stagnation Advisory means the air will not move enough to clear what is already in it.

The forecaster’s discussion

Written by MORPC for Columbus and filed with AirNow.

Monday, September 28: A surface ridge of high pressure to the west will produce light northerly winds, carrying clean air into central Ohio. In addition, mild temperatures will limit ozone formation, leading to Good AQI levels. Tuesday, September 29: A morning temperature inversion will confine pollutants near the surface. Furthermore, calm to light southeasterly winds will hinder dispersion throughout the day, resulting in low-Moderate AQI levels. Wednesday, increasing southerly winds will aid dispersion, while partly cloudy skies slow ozone formation. Therefore, AQI levels will be high-Good. Thursday, a ridge of high pressure aloft will reduce atmospheric mixing. In addition, southwesterly winds will carry regional pollutants into central Ohio, while periods of sun and highs in the mid-80s promote ozone production. As a result, AQI levels will be low-Moderate. Friday, clouds and rain showers will reduce ozone formation as a cold front moves across the Ohio Valley. Furthermore, moderate northwesterly to northerly winds will disperse pollutants, leading to Good AQI levels. Saturday, moderate east-northeasterly winds will recirculate clean air across the state, while mostly cloudy skies and cool temperatures keep ozone development in check. Therefore, AQI levels will remain Good.

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.

What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
