The Rafter 4B Fire in Schleicher County started shortly after noon on Saturday, September 26 under elevated fire conditions. Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to provide assistance in the form of additional firefighters and heavy equipment at 12:28 pm and responded quickly. Texas A&M Forest Service is currently in unified command with local departments. The fire is burned very actively in grass and brush and was pushed to the north by south/southeast winds. There were crown fire runs in cedar and oak. A pipeline and structures were threatened. Texas A&M bulldozers continue working on both flanks of the fire after creating a safety zone for all resources. Dozers completed line on left flank of the fire. Five bulldozers, numerous engines, a helicopter and multiple air tankers responded to the fire. Retardant strengthened the pipeline right of way i front of the fire. Crews worked to keep the fire from crossing the pipeline, but there was some spotting across the line. Heavy equipment worked to catch the spot fires and slow the progression of the fire. The fire is 3 miles long. Aircraft ran out of daylight and had to return to bases. Update, Sunday, September 27, 2:30 pm: Bulldozers continue to construct firelines. Engines are patrolling the lines and extinguishing hotspots. Air tankers and a helicopter have been used on Sunday for retardant and water drops. Update, Monday, September 28, 7 am: On Sunday, bulldozers continued to construct and improve firelines while engines patrolled firelines to keep the fire from crossing. Despite their efforts, the fire crossed the pipeline and firefighters immediately engaged the spot fire. Aircraft were used to assist firefighters and cool the fire. A storm with high winds and lightning passed over the fire area in the late afternoon. Rainfall was very light, but firefighters had to seek shelter due the lightning. Once the storm passed firefighting efforts resumed. Fire behavior was minimal in the evening, but fuels were still smoldering. Update, Monday, September 28, 5 pm: Firefighters continued to improve firelines and mopup hotspots on Monday. Update, Tuesday, September 29, 11:00 am: Yesterday, firefighters continued to improve containment lines and extinguish smoldering fuels and hotspots. Today, personnel and equipment will continue the important work of ensuring firelines are in proper condition to keep fire from crossing and also mopping up smoldering hotspots. Final Update, Tuesday, September 29, 7 pm: The Rafter 4B Fire is 100% contained. The Federal Aviation Administration Temporary Flight Restriction has been removed.
