April 16, 2024 Eruption of Ruang

A minor eruption began at around 1337 on 16 April…and at 1600 the Alert Level was raised to 3. According to a news article a larger eruption began at 2045 and ash plumes rose 2 km. The eruption intensified overnight during 16-17 April…BNPB reported that 828 people evacuated and the communication network in Laingpatehi village was not operational. Photos showed incandescent material being ejected above the summit, incandescent material on the flanks, and dense ash plumes with lightning rising into dark, nighttime skies. (reference #13767)

As of 18 April, Tagulandang Port is currently not operational. Communication lines have been disrupted in Laingpatehi Island. Based on the limited data available, it is estimated that 7.2K people, 1.9K households, and 15.5M USD worth of infrastructure are within 10 km and more likely to be adversely impacted, and that there is no concentrated population between 10 km and 30 km of the volcano. The BNPB detailed material losses due to the impact of this disaster including approximately 135 houses in Sitaro Regency, 363 houses were damaged, 2 churches were damaged and 1 elementary school was damaged. (reference #13768)

As of 7 May, more than 3,200 houses and more than 50 units of community facilities (school, health facility, markets, bridge and etc) damaged by the Mt Ruang volcaninc activities. (reference #13776)
