September 21 , 1679, Red Sea. In the second half of Sha'ban (from 21 September) a volcanic eruption occurred in the Zuqar islands, N.W. of al-Mukha in the southern Red Sea. It blazed like coal and threw sparks into the sea. The eruption was likened to a great minaret towering into the air, and it was seen by mountain dwellers in the Yemen as far away as Wasab (a district c. 30 miles northeast of Zabid). In the day, the eruption clouds were equally visible. The eruption was followed by a series of earthquakes in al Mukha, which was partially destroyed by a fire. The governor took to the sea in fear. The fire was extinguished by rainfall at the beginning of Shawwal (from 5
November 1679), i.e. after about six weeks. (reference #3845)
