Travel times

NOAA NCEI’s travel time map for this tsunami: one line for each hour after the source, showing how long the first wave took to reach each part of the ocean.

The map of NCEI’s lines needs JavaScript.

  • 1 to 4 hours
  • 5 to 6 hours
  • 7 to 14 hours
  • 15 hours and more

NCEI computed these with the TTT software from the epicenter and a 2-minute bathymetry grid. In NCEI’s words, “Calculated times are usually within 1 hour of the observed travel times, but can differ by more than one hour, particularly when the location is across the Pacific Basin.” The lines give when the first wave arrives, not how high it is. Where the literature gives no number, NCEI records a description on a scale of 1 to 4, printed here in its words. Damage is in millions of US dollars of the year of the event, not adjusted for inflation.

What the record says

NCEI’s account, from the sources it cites.

A great earthquake that occurred 495 km (305 miles) SSW of Severo-Kuril'sk, Kuril Islands, Russia and 1665 km (1030 miles) NE of Tokyo, Japan, generated a tsunami that was observed throughout the Pacific Basin. (reference #1053)

In Hawaii, the tsunami caused one injury at Waikiki, Honolulu, and five-foot waves were observed at Kahului. No damage was reported, but beaches on the Big Island were closed and the city shut down Hanauma Bay because of strong surges.

Six-foot surges observed at Crescent City, California, destroying two docks, causing significant damage to a third and minor damage to the remaining docks in the small boat basin.

One parking lot was flooded at Nawiliwili, Hawaii by a tsunami with a recorded wave height of 88 cm. (reference #1053)

The first tsunami wave from the Kuril Islands November 11, 2006 earthquake arrived at Hanasaki, Hokkaido with an amplitude of 30 cm. After the observation of this minor tsunami in Japan, a large tsunami was not expected in Alaska or along the US west coast. (reference #3974)
