Travel times

How long the first wave took to reach each part of the ocean, one line for each hour up to 24, estimated from the source and the depth of the sea.

The travel times are computed in your browser, which needs JavaScript.

  • 1 to 4 hours
  • 5 to 6 hours
  • 7 to 14 hours
  • 15 hours and more

Computed in your browser the way NOAA’s own travel time maps are: the wave travels at the square root of gravity times the depth, over NOAA’s ETOPO1 depths averaged to a 10 arc-minute grid. Checked against NOAA NCEI’s maps for 21 tsunamis over the first 24 hours, these lines fall within 10 minutes of NCEI’s at half the points compared and within 52 minutes at 9 in 10. They give when the first wave could arrive, not how high it is; bays, harbors and island chains finer than the grid can see it later. Not for use in a warning: see tsunami.gov.

The record gives no deaths, injuries or damage for this tsunami.

What the record says

NCEI’s account, from the sources it cites.

A magnitude 8.5 (Mw) earthquake in the South Kuril Islands, Russia, produced a four-meter wave locally. The tsunami was also observed in Japan, Mexico, Hawaii, the west coast of the U.S. and on several islands in the Pacific. It was reported observed at Citizens Dock, Crescent City, California, where it rose and fell 2.1 feet (range) in three minutes at 8:22 A.M. It was also recorded at Avila, California.

1963, October 13, 05:17:55.8 UTC. 44.81 N, 149.54 E, depth 47 km, magnitude 8.1 Ms, intensity IX. Urup (main tremor); tsunamis in Urup Island region... There were tsunamis up to 4.5 m in height.. (reference #223)

1963, October 13, 17:18 hr [local time]. The tsunami that arose had the strongest impact on the southern half of the Kuril Islands, where the height of the water rise reached 4-5 m. It approached the coasts of Kamchatka in a very weakened form and was recorded only by the sea-level recorder in Avachinskaya Bay, 1 hr 54 min after the earthquake. The height of the largest wave was only 7 cm. The tsunami was observed along the entire coast of the Kuril Islands and was very weak at the northern coasts of the Sea of Okhotsk, the eastern coasts of Sakhalin, in Japan, the coasts of North America, on the Aleutian, Caroline, Hawaiian, Mariana and Marshall islands. (reference #2024)
