October 22, 1922 Tsunami: Tasman Sea, Australia

The Mercury, Hobart, Tasmania, 28 October 1922. Tidal Wave at Nubeena. Nubeena residents claim that their township was visited by a tidal wave last Sunday evening. Between 8.30 and 9 o'clock in the evening a roar was heard, and suddenly a big rush of water swept up the banks to a distance of about 70 to 80 yards. This kept up for about an hour, the volume of the inrush gradually lessening in the meantime. The force of the water overturned dinghies, and two fishing ketches were shifted from their moorings. Logs were swept up as far as the main road, and fish were washed up on to the banks. It was the first time that any of the residents had witnessed such an occurrence, and it naturally put them in a great state of excitement. However, when it was seen that the waters did not intend to intrude any further, but were receding the alarm subsided. (reference #7755)
