Occurred during the Mudhen Hurricane, of September 1-12, 1889. Unusually high waves were reported on September 8 and 10 in the mid-Atlantic Coast, including Asbury Park, Atlantic City, Sea Isle City, Coney Island, Long Island, Staten Island, and other exposed points (Reference #1853). Woodworth (Reference #1743) suggests that the two main events within the time frame are "tsunamic hurricane" events. No evidence so far links the waves to a true tsunami, or tsunami caused by offshore landslide. Damage from the Mudhen Hurricane waves has been detailed on the Woodworth Web site, and also in detail in the New York Times articles.
